Oh it's worthwhile, don't get me wrong. We have very different approaches to music appreciation. You'll listen to something and go "Okay. They're trying to channel Ulver, Amorphis, and Katatonia but the picking and tempo are entirely wrong" while I'm over there "eeee neat atmosphere. Anyone got more brie?" Beyond that technical factor, you're very acutely aware of what your own music accomplishes and are sometimes harsh towards those treading the same ground who aren't on the same level artistically but are more commercially viable. Plus you tend to hate anything that seems gay... except 50+ year old men in silly face paint and a top hat of course.
