Dani Filth recently spoke with Eddie Trunk on SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation. During their conversation, he talks about Cradle Of Filth working with Ed Sheeran and how that came to be.

SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation, hosted by Eddie Trunk, airs daily at 3 PM, ET on SiriusXM’s Faction Talk. Audio clip and transcript below courtesy of SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation.

Dani Filth on how Cradle Of Filth got to work with Ed Sheeran:

“Strangely enough, and it is strange, he did a video like five, six years ago, I think, I think where he was like a vampire in it. And one of the questions came up, big interview, were you ever into, I dunno how it came up, but were you into metal? And he quoted, ‘Yeah, yeah. I was into Slipknot’s first album and I was into Nymphetamine and that was my go-to album.’ He said, even so, and I forgot about this, I had totally forgotten about it. He said, ‘Even that far that I applied to be an engineer and work at the studio where they were doing their album,’ meaning us. The only thing was that the guy who owned the studio always picked himself up. He was trying to sell the studio and we weren’t recording an album there. We were just rehearsing for the album to record it elsewhere. So basically that fell through and Ed ended up being transferred not to a studio, but to work at a local council, which apparently he absolutely, absolutely hated. And then made a pledge for himself that he would never have a crappy day job like that and he would pursue his music, which, you know, is ironic. Well, no, cool actually. But ironically, I think that had he had come to our studio and worked with us, he might have given up on music.

“But the thing is, he also lives in the same county of England. There’s not a huge amount of musicians here. It’s quite a rural area. I think apart from us, The Darkness. There are other bands, but not Florence and the Machine, you know, et cetera, et cetera. You get the picture. So when we met up, which was just arranged by the management ’cause they just got talking. They said, ‘Yeah, it sounds like a good idea.’ Pitched it to Ed, he was like, ‘Yeah, absolutely.’ And this is the coolest part, we would like text him for about two years. And I just was thinking, this is never gonna happen. It was just all a bit, you know, hearsay. And then one day just text me close to Christmas and says, ‘I’m free next week. Do you want me to come to the studio?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, that’d be great. Absolutely. Yeah, sure.’

“And I immediately was thinking, God, our studio’s not, you know, it’s our own studio. It’s not what he’s used to. Needs a bit of tidying up, better clean the cattle out, et cetera, et cetera. And I was just envisaging him coming with an entourage of people, bouncers, you know, a film crew. In reality, he just turned up on his own. He bought his wife’s car with him. He had a Cradle Of Filth hoodie on, guitar slung over his back, and that was it. We just spent a great afternoon. We’d been working on the song, like we sent him the guitar parts and he amended it. And yeah, it’s turned out really well. It’s exactly what people say when they question it. They say, ‘Well, it sounds like Ed Sheeran. And it sounds like Cradle of Filth.’”

Grammy Award-nominated extreme metal institution, Cradle Of Filth, will issue their 14th studio album, The Screaming Of The Valkyries, on March 21 via Napalm Records.

Cradle Of Filth reigns supreme as one of the most revered, formative and notorious names in music – from the depths of the extreme metal underground to the peaks of mainstream pop culture itself, and are responsible for breaking ground for many of today’s top metal artists with their trademark mixture of blackened heaviness, macabre theatricality and scintillating gothic style.

Following the release of their single “To Live Deliciously”, the track’s music video has been released in all of its gory glory. Experience the ride of your life (or death, rather) and watch the video now.

Dani Filth says about the video: “An observation on religious restraint as well as being a window to tout a bit of blasphemous filth, the video for ‘To Live Deliciously’ (our second from the new album) is a pleasant social engagement betwixt a pious young nun and her mentor priest. Just with a smattering of demonic possession and sexual misconduct added for good stock.”

Following the release of 2021’s Existence Is Futile (#20 Billboard 200 with Hard Rock Genre), Cradle Of Filth emerge again with a legacy-cementing opus. On The Screaming Of The Valkyries, Dani Filth’s recognizable scream and equally identifiable growl stand mightily alongside twin guitar attacks, symphonic flourishes and explosive rhythm section, implemented by drummer Martin “Marthus” Skaroupka, bassist Daniel Firth, guitarists Marek “Ashok” Smerda and Donny Burbage, and keyboardist/vocalist Zoe Federoff.

After album opener “To Live Deliciously” hits immediately, second track “Demagoguery” blends dark beauty, blast beats and slaytanic groove as only Cradle can combine. Across the album’s blunt and unforgiving yet inviting expanse, Cradle summons the succulent flavors of classic albums like Dusk And Her Embrace and Cruelty And The Beast with the galloping (but no less fierce) thunder of recent entries Hammer Of The Witches and Existence Is Futile. Flashes of early metal influences coalesce with carnivorous glee into unapologetic death ‘n’ roll. “White Hellebore” is Cradle Of Filth at its most devilishly straightforward, juxtaposing traditional heavy metal with blasts of thrashing fury, spinning back to operatic goth without sounding disjointed. Anchored by arguably the most mournful melody in their catalog, “Non Omnis Moriar” (“I shall not wholly die”) could be a cousin to Paradise Lost or Anathema, inverted through Cradle’s thorny prism. “You Are My Nautilus” is the darkest song Iron Maiden never wrote, spinning an epic tale with dueling guitars, while “Ex Sanguine Draculae” conjures Dusk-era atmosphere with imaginative new colors.

Produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by Scott Atkins at Grindstone Studios in Suffolk, England, The Screaming of the Valkyries beckons the brave into a new era of Cradle Of Filth misadventure, celebrating massive melancholic melody, blackened thrash, and apocalyptic existential dread with a grinning smattering of unbridled revelry. The Screaming of the Valkyries is a bloody dark love letter to the longtime legion of Cradle Of Filth faithful and a stunning entryway for fresh lambs to the sonic slaughter.
