CRADLE OF FILTH frontman Dani Filth was recently interviewed by Australia's Harvey Community Radio 96.5 FM. The full conversation can be streamed below. A few excerpts follow (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): On whether the group, which tours extensively worldwide, changes their approach to live performances in different territories: Dani: "No. Obviously, gigs depend on size, the venue and the equipment. We were a little bit challenged when we were in Indonesia — just there were a few things that were wrong, wrong [drum] kit. But we've got a great stage crew, and they really persevere. They're pretty technologically savvy, so we always manage to get around it. We've had a few issues as well, just stuff that goes wrong. In L.A., we played a massive sellout show, and for some reason, my microphone decided to not work. But we got around it. They're really good like that. One of my heroes, [Glenn] Danzig, was sitting and just watching us from the side of the stage. Fortunately, we managed to get another mic from the support act." On the title of the group's latest album, "Cryptoriana – The Seductiveness Of Decay": Dani: "'Cryptoriana' is basically an amalgam of 'crypt' and 'Victoriana.' The album's based in the Victorian era or, if it's not based in the Victorian era, it's based on Victorian horror novels, or within that style at least. I've got a real infatuation with it, because I love their attitude toward life and death, and they had a real morbid streak to them. The subtitle, 'The Seductiveness Of Decay', implies their infatuation or our infatuation with personified death, or even a little bit of self-destruction. I think everybody's got a little bit of that." On how he'd sell CRADLE OF FILTH to someone who has never seen or heard the group: Dani: "It's loud, fast, energetic, got an amazing light show, symphonic, cinematic. It's also melodic as well. Obviously, having 12 albums under our belts and various EPs and what-have-you, we've got quite an extensive back catalog to plunder, so we basically play a few fan favorites, stuff from the new album, band favorites, singles... it's a pretty full-on experience." On his early musical influences: Dani: "I got into metal when I was about 12. I had a cousin – he loved MOTÖRHEAD and all the old New Wave Of British Heavy Metal bands. He introduced me to Ozzy [Osbourne], and then a friend at school had some albums. My first real album was MERCYFUL FATE 'Don't Break The Oath'. I went straight into things like W.A.S.P., SLAYER and METALLICA, then got into thrash metal. Later on, I really got into soundtracks as well. I think our sound is sort of an amalgam of all these things." On whether he'd opt to follow the CRADLE OF FILTH path if given the choice to do it all over again: Dani: "I was going into journalism, so I was going to go work for a newspaper. Somebody would take a year out to travel. I took a year out to see how far I could go with the band. I would do it again, but you'd hate to be put in that scenario, because you'd be questioning every decision you ever made, and because of that, you'd miss out on learning curves. If I was going back in time, you'd start picking [from] other people's records. You'd probably start with 'Thriller'." "Cryptoriana - The Seductiveness Of Decay" was released last September via Nuclear Blast. The group is planning to release a 20th anniversary edition of its third album, "Cruelty And The Beast", later this year.
