Gunner and Chow of the Q105.1 radio station in Fargo, North Dakota recently conducted an interview with former SLAYER and current PHILM drummer Dave Lombardo. You can now listen to the chat below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET). On what makes his drumming style so unique: "Well, I think by kind of examining how I taught myself… I'm autodidact, which is you're self-taught. I just developed different. I interpreted what I heard on records rather than a teacher telling me how it's done, so I just have a whole different approach to drums. And I think that's what makes me a little different. I'm sure there's a lot of drummers out there that are self-taught. I don't know… Something about the combination of having Cuban roots and having that kind of rhythm mixed in with rock and some funk and jazz, because I love all the different genres of music. I don't limit myself. So I think that's what it does. And with thrash music, or heavy music, I just play hard — the way it's meant to be played." On KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons' recent statement that "rock is dead": "I really don’t care. I feel that all you have to is listen to the new [PHILM] record. You're gonna tell me that rock is dead? No. It's played with even more passion today than probably back then. I don't know… I see things a little differently. I'm optimistic. And I see that rock is still alive and well. You just have to look for it." Lombardo was effectively fired from SLAYER after sitting out the band's Australian tour in February/March 2013 due to a contract dispute with the other members of the group. He has since been replaced by Paul Bostaph, who was previously SLAYER's drummer from 1992 until 2001 and recorded four albums with the band. PHILM released its sophomore album, "Fire From The Evening Sun", on September 16 (one day earlier internationally) via UDR. The band's lineup is completed by guitarist/vocalist Gerry Paul Nestler (CIVIL DEFIANCE), and bassist Francisco "Pancho" Eduardo Tomaselli (WAR).
