What's everyone's favorite albums/songs? I've really been getting into him lately, but I only have a small fraction of his stuff. So far I just have a 4-disc set called Sound and Vision, and a best of album.

Any other recommendations?

Up to Diamond Dogs? I don't think so. You're missing out on 6 classic albums if you stop there.

I pretty much like all his stuff. The folksy, the glam, the cheese pop, the electronica....It's Bowie, and I like that he reinvents himself.

All of them :)

For a walk through his discography I would probably start with Ziggy Stardust, then Heroes, Let's Dance, Outside and Heathen. Those are not all my favorite albums but gives an idea of the different bowie styles.

My personal favorites: Ziggy stardust, Diamond dogs, Pin ups, hunky dory, outside and Earthling.

But what do you like on the best of album?

By all means, get Low (1977). A 30-year old album that honestly sounds like it could have been put out today. Light years ahead of its time, particularly in the striking use of electronics.

Ah, the legend that is Bowie!

My favourite has always been "The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars" .. But that is probably because my Dad played it shitloads when i was a kid..

"i'm deranged" in lost highway = priceless. what a fantastic song that is. i think he wrote it together with eno

That song is from the "Outside" album. He did the whole record with brian eno fiddling the electronics and it's a true underrated masterpiece.

The must-have's are from space oddity up to let's dance when he started to change his style to a more dancy thing...and ziggy stardust is an absolutely sublime piece of rock n'roll.

I agree about Outside. Awesome album but the only bad part is I prefer the version of "Strangers When We Meet" on Buddha of Suburbia much more.

Yeah, I've always liked "Outside". Really dark. The storyline is pretty grim. When I saw him live, he ONLY played songs from it, aside from "The Man Who Sold the World", I think. Maybe one other even more obscure tune... My wife was PISSED. I thought it was pretty cool. But I'd be lying if I didn't say that I was bummed that I saw Bowie and didn't hear him play any of the real classic cuts (of which there are, what, a hundred?).

Apparently Outside was to be the first album of a bowie-eno trilogy, dunno why they didn't complete it. There's an album around the internets that's called "Outside Outtakes" wich is a massive jam session with bowie, eno, and the rest of the musicians involved in Outside. Haven't heard it but they say it's as strange as hell.
