David Ellefson is featured in a new interview with The Delz Show, in which he discusses the 40th anniversary of Megadeth’s 1985 album, Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good!
Following a lengthy chat about how the album was created, DJ Delz says he misses seeing Ellefson and and his former Megadeth bandmate, Dave Mustaine, together and hopefully will see the duo reunite, to which Ellefson responds, “I miss Dave too. Some of the best stories of my life begin with, ‘Remember the time me and Dave…,’ fill in the blank, you know what I mean? Because we lived such a, you know, interesting life, you know, together with that band. We haven’t talked in a few years, but, you know, I miss the guy, of course. We had a lot of fun. Anytime we’ve ever had these gaps like this, as soon as we get back together, it’s like we just were hanging out yesterday.”
Watch the full interview below:
Kings Of Thrash, the acclaimed union of Megadeth alumni David Ellefson (bass) and Jeff Young (guitar), plus Chaz Leon (vocals, guitar) and Dead Groove/BulletBoys drummer Fred Aching, with special guest (and fellow ex-Megadeth-er) Chris Poland, recently returned to the fray with a stunning new single, “Lockdown”, and a dramatic shift in attitude, too.
In an interview with The Rock N’ Roll & Coffee Show, Ellefson talked about the story behind the “Lockdown” single, his iconic “Peace Sells” bass line and how it came to life, bass technique, what’s brewing with Ellefson Coffee Co., and more.
Asked if he thinks Kings Of Thrash will release a full album, Ellefson responded, “It’s possible, I’m certainly not gonna say no to it. I’ll tell you what, it was great to just do one song. You know, making a record is a lot of work, especially when you live in different cities and you’re trying to collaborate. One of the things about Kings is we are not four of the same guy, we are four very different individuals, and so to sort of be agreeable on something, I’m not gonna lie, it’s a bit of a challenge. And quite honestly, it’s the diversity that makes Kings so cool. And I guess I come from that even with Megadeth, you know. And Chris Poland, Jeff Young, they were sort of the diverse guitar players to Dave [Mustaine], you know what I mean, so I grew up in an environment that kind of expected that. So to have Kings mirror that, I think is cool, I’m already used to that dynamic. And having everybody not just agree on everything, but everybody bring a bit of a different perspective, it’s cool. I mean, that’s ultimately what a group is about.”
He added, “I mean, look, every group needs a leader. To some degree I lead a lot of it. I put Jeff over there to sort of put setlists together and do that, like with this song ‘Lockdown’, I tasked Chaz with that and said, ‘Hey, go do that.’ Fred, he’s our liaison with the record label, he does all of our artwork and everything. He shot the video, he produced it and directed it and everything. So, we’ve got four really creative guys that do very different things. So it’s, like, we’ve got four guys that really contribute something. And that’s great, to have four different dudes.”

Kings Of Thrash, after all, is most renowned as the sonic spark that detonated one of the recent past’s most incendiary live albums, the mighty The Mega Years reinvention of Megadeth’s first and three studio LPs, Killing Is My Business…And Business Is Good (1985) and So Far, So Good…So What? (1988), plus highlights from the intervening Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying! (1986). The albums, in other words, upon which the entire thrash metal genre was built and defined in the first place.
As guitarist Young put it at the outset of the continent-devouring Mega Years tour, “The mission here is to bring a connection of goodwill through the music, with a collaboration of musicians and friends in our community. Our thrash tribe casts a wide net to give people hope in a time when they’re looking for something positive and uplifting. What better way than to do that than through the music which has become the soundtrack to our lives.”
Out now, the new single “Lockdown,” however, sees the Kings Of Thrash step out of the shadow of their old band, while both maintaining, and even amplifying all the qualities that made those albums so wildly influential.
A brand new Kings Of Thrash original, “‘Lockdown’ has it all,” confirms guitarist Poland. “Great riffs. A super catchy chorus. And a rhythm section that is locked up tight”! And I’m honored to have been invited to be a part of it.
“Lockdown” is what Young describes as “a cool mix of 80s thrash and punk vibes, plus four guitar solos (!!!) We had a lot of fun bringing this song to life!”
“’Lockdown’ captures the true spirit of old school thrash metal,” says bassist Ellefson, “with a lyric that can be seen as timely in this chaotic world we now live in.”
A stunning new video, directed and edited by drummer Aching and his Dead Groove bandmate Holly West, captures the band both live in the studio and, appropriately, behind bars.

There’s more Kings Of Thrash on the way, too, as they celebrate the 30th anniversary of Megadeth’s Youthanasia and other thrash classics. Their Thrashin’ SoCal mini tour ignites at the Whisky on September 4, before Thrashin’ The East begins in Frenchtown NJ on October 17.
And, concludes Young, “We can’t wait to hear everybody singing the ‘Lockdown’ chorus with us live!”
