Can anybody think of any death metal, black metal or any extreme metal genres that feature a drum solo? I was just thinking about that after hearing this progressive rock band do a brief drum solo, and though damn.. metal has a lot of really talented drummers, but anybody doing a solo these days?

Yeah man, good point. All I can recall are the odd fills, breaks and intros that can't really be seen as solos. The Haunted has a fair few of em!

Hmmm. I spose, a short drum solo (serving as an intro) > Ebony Tears - Hands of Doom.

Morbid Angel's Gateways to Annihilation album have a few drum breaks that are good. listen to this songs:

Summoning Redemption
He Who Sleeps
Opening of the Gates

I would also suggest that you check out Pete's drum instrumental track on Formulas Fatal to the Flesh titled ''Hymnos Rituales de Guerra''. Its just him playing the drums in a tribal kind of way.

nile, off of in their darkened shrines, the one that comes to mind is the blessed dead and its right at the begining, its not too long, but man its nice.

Maybe some songs by The Crown? I don't really know any drum "solos" but Janne is by far the best, most interesting drummer out there. He throws in fills and odd times...he's just awesome. His work on Crowned in Terror has been his best so far I think...

There's going to be a drum solo on the live album Cryptopsy are releasing.
Dude, I can't wait for this! I saw him live, but there wasn't an all out solo. It'll be great! :p

Anyway...Origin sometimes showcases the drum parts...I wouldn't call them solos or fills, but just some nifty little stuff.

I don't listen to much death and black metal, but to me one of the best "drum songs" (though there is no real solo) is "Anthem to the Estranged" by Metal Church. The song starts off with acoustic and clean guitar and for the first quarter of the song there is no drums. I guess Kirk Arrington (the drummer) decides to make up for it after that. It is not like listening to Mark Zonder (Fates Warning) or another technical God, exactly. Arrington is technically sound, but it is the mix of his technical prowess, his personality in his playing ad the fact that the song is more or less based around his drumming that is so cool. This may not be what you are looking for, but it is cool anyway.
