Decrepit Birth drummer Samus Paulicelli, who runs a YouTube channel under the name 66Samus, has shared a one-on-one interview with Dream Theater drumnmer, Mike Portnoy. They discuss Portnoy’s return to the band, their new Parasomnia album, abnd more.
Portnoy on playing his first show back with Dream Theater on October 20th, 2024 in London:
“It was such an array of emotions. There was the excitement, and the energy, and the adrenaline, but there was also a lot of nerves to be honest with you. I never get nervous before shows, but that particular one was really scary. First of all, we’re playing the O2 Arena; that’s where fuckin’ Led Zeppelin played their reunion show. That’s where Genesis played their final show. It’s a legendary, huge arena, so that in itself was terrifying. But also, the first night on any normal tour, the first show is always nerve-wracking. This had so much emotional weight to it – the first time we were playing together in 13, 14 years, whatever the timeline was – it was scary as shit.”
Dream Theater released their new album, Parasomnia, on February 7th. It marks the return of founding drummer, Mike Portnoy, who left the band in 2010 and was replaced by Mike Mangini.
Portnoy shared the following message for the album release:
“Exactly one year ago (to the day!), Feb 7th, 2024, the five of us stood in the same room together for the first time in well over a decade…we then spent the majority of the year creating our first album together in 15 years. Today, we can finally share it with all of you.
We could not be prouder or more excited about what we created. We were so inspired being together again and feel we really rose to the occasion to create something special. Parasomnia represents everything that is classic Dream Theater, mixing tastes of the past with visions of the future…
We hope you enjoy this sonic experience. It is best enjoyed in your optimum listening environment..(preferably from start to finish like watching a film). But however you take it in, we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did making it.”
