Deep Inferna
Self released demo 2004
By Russell Garwood
Deep hail from London, UK. They play a brand of goth-rock with lots of melody and groove, catchy riffs galore, and largely mid-paced songs. Lower-range female vocals provide an effective, organic front to the music. The sustained, mid-paced riffage of the enjoyably crunchy guitars compliments this well, while occasional non-distorted tones are a successful addition. While largely arpeggiated, they have a shimmering feel - an effective contrast to heavier sections. This dichotomy is most noticeable on track three, From The Shadows. Also present is prominent bass. Unusually far-forward in the mix, the lines are often catchy, sometimes complex and tend to work well, especially in quieter moments. The drums complete a competent rhythms section, with driving beats, yet good dynamic awareness the subtle cymbal work under the non-distorted guitars is a good example.
The songs are generally well written, with lots of hooks, and while some themes are repeated for a time, there is enough variation to keep everything interesting. Slightly muddy production is expected from such a demo, and doesnt detract from the stripped-down sound. For a debut self-financed release, this is an impressive EP. The band work well as a unit, and I would imagine are very good live, while well-structured and written songs show a great deal of potential. Goth-rock fans could do far worse than checking this demo out, as with some development, Deep have a bright future. I look forward to hearing further work, and seeing the band live.
