Spruce Goose
Then Goose me up woman!
Yeah, I have the album from 30 years ago, as well as the video. The one from 69 is a fuckin classic. Blackmore has a guitar tone that he stopped using after In Rock came out. It sounds very raw and exciting. Their hair cuts are funny too
Blackmore and Ian Gillan didnt want to do the concerto originally because it was at the same time that they were trying to record In Rock, and they felt that the concerto would give the public a wrong impression about what the bands main focus was. But the concerto actually did alot to help Purple as it gave them a shitload of publicity. Ian Gillan wrote the lyrics to his 2nd movement about half an hour before the performance on a napkin at the pub.
The 2 dont differ all that much, except that the current version has Steve Morse on guitar, so some of the guitar solos are different, as Morse is arguably a more technical player, and likes to have an occasional shred. Morse is probably my favorite guitar playert ever, but there was something special about Blackmore when he really wanted to turn it on. Morse is mr Consistent night after night.
I remember talking to Roger Glove (bass) about Blackmore, and he said that he was just one of those people that god looked down upon and said 'You are going to have this talent.' He said that Ritchie sometimes doesnt know how good he is, and doesnt know what to do with his talent. He then said that sometimes on stage, Ritchie could play the most amazing solo that had ever been played, and the rest of the band would just stop playing and look at Blackmore in amazment... and then Ritchie would just ruin the solo by taking it in a differnet direction and totally stuffing it up.
