deep purple q?

Rapture is a very solid record and is, IMO, much better than Bananas, but neither is as strong as Purpendicular (the first with Morse). The Deep Purple of the last ten years is not as heavy as the Purp of yesteryear....and the majority of the songs are at a mid-tempo pace. Dont expect another Highway Star. Of course, Gillan's voice still sounds silky-smooth and graceful, but he really cant scream anymore. But again, their recent music really doen't call for screaming.

Many here, however, really like both records, so perhaps you should wait to hear what they have to say. I think Wyvern speaks very highly of Bananas and a few have said great things about Rapture.
Of course, as I see it, none of the Morse era records are as strong as the classic stuff with Blackmore.

If you really want to check out the Morse era, I'd hit them in this order:
Purpendicular
Rapture
Bananas
Abandon

They have two live records, as well, with one being an AWESOME set (Live At the Olypmia '96).

just how good is the rapture... and bananas cd's?!

"Bananas" is awsome and I mean the best stuff from Morse era. When "Purpendicular" came out I thought it was a fresh change and a very good album but after listen to "Bananas" it seems like a primitive thing.
"Bananas" has magic that's maybe the best word to describe it, the vox is very good considering Gillan's age, the guitar has it's own personality (forget comparisons to Blackmore or Bolin) an so the keyboards (Airey has always been good but now he carved his own identity separated from Lord), no need to describe the quality of the rythm section time doesn't pass over Glover/Paice.
Songs like 'I Got Your Number', 'Haunted', 'Walk On', 'Picture Of Innocence', 'Silver Tongue' hook you, grab you, wrap you and bury you inside. I never got tired of play them, never become jaded or burn out.

The main problem with "Bananas" it's that it's so good (IMO) that kill "Rapture Of The Deep", especially when it came weak on the vocal department. Gillan sound tired, no much energy compared to previous releases and he even raps in three songs make them umbearable. The rest of the album is mediocre and frankly three songs are good/average only: 'Clearly Quite Absurd' (ballad in the 'Wasted Sunsets', 'Haunted' vein but not as energetic) 'Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye' and 'Before Time Began' (which have some interesting instrumental work in-between very prog oriented).
Again I listened to ROTD yesterday and there's nothing to make change my mind. I'm severely dissapointed with this album even more than I was with "Abandon" (the weak follow up to "Purpendicular"). Historically DP had this good album/weak album behavior and even in good albums they have some forgettable fillers, but I really was expecting something more this time.

Bananas for me! I don't care that it's not as heavy. I don't care that it's more mid-tempo. All I care about is the songwriting, and I think Bananas is an awesome cd. I still listen to it regularly and never grow tired of it.
