Call them Satan’s cheerleaders, or every Christian’s worst nightmare, Deicide has never been a band to shy away from controversy. The founding fathers of death metal, Tampa, Florida, cast themselves as one of the most influential and controversial metal bands early on in their career and recent releases show they still hold the mantle.

On the back of their mighty ninth studio album, “Till Death Do Us Part”, Deicide have announced that they will extend their one-off US headlining tour to include Australia….perhaps for the last time? With vocalist Glen Benton thanking fans worldwide and bidding them “farewell” and “good luck” on the album’s credits, and rumours already circulating about this aptly titled album being their swansong, this tour may be every fan’s last chance to see Deicide…ever.

Deicide formed in 1987 and released their first, self-titled album in 1990. From their inception their sound was established as an uncompromising one: brutal, extreme and provoking. “Deicide” and second album “Legion” were instant successes that set the benchmark for death metal across the US. Deicide’s reputation was quickly formed, but not only musically.

Controversy and notoriety preceded the band: vocalist Glen Benton with the inverted crucifix burnt into his forehead, the pelting of crowds with live animal organs and the cancellation of shows forced by enraged religious groups went hand-in-hand with vicious and blasphemous recordings.

20 years on, Deicide return to Australia with an outfit once again steeped in classic, straightforward death metal and a live show that has never deviated from blistering, intense and unpredictable. Coupled with a dark, vague cloud hovering over the band’s future, this tour may just be the perfect, and essential, way to end 2008.
