Deliverance The Executioner
Killin Time Records 2004
By Russell Garwood
These Italians are obviously big Metallica fans. All the way from the logo to the music, their biggest influence is clear. Pure thrash all the way; tight, fast rhythm guitars hold some melody, but little variation, while over this occasionally sung, often shouted vocals provide a harsh exterior. Tight, straight-forward drumming is just what the music requires to keep the impressive momentum, while the bass is less audible (this is a thrash band, after all). The song-writing is solid, with some memorable, and all very listenable tunes, but the The Executioner can begin to feel samey towards the end of the release.
Clean production is welcome, and the sound is generally good, apart from slightly tinny guitars. Deliverance are technically very competent, as is apparent from the tight performances all around, and can write a good song. Their music lacks originality, but thats really not what the band are about; homage all the way, thrash fans could do far worse than checking The Executioner out. For followers of less retro metal this will, perhaps, not be so welcome. A good debut, showing promise.
