Derek Sherinian

Damn that is good!, look at the line-up too: Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde, Al DiMeola, Billy Sheehan plus more.

Alright, im gonna have to hear more of this!

Thats interesting how he would have a song called "Nightmare Cinema"... i wonder what the story is behind it, if there is one.

Well the only reason I bring this up is that when Derek was with Dream Theater, they sometimes had this "other band" called "Nightmare Cinema" on stage. This band was Petrucci on drums, Myung on Keys, Portnoy on bass and Derek on guitar.. and it was cleverly titled "Nightmare Cinema" and they covered Deep Purples "Perfect Strangers".. i think thats DP... anyways, yeah maybe there is some link.

Are you sure it wasn't called Nightmare Theater?

Derek's going to be in the Ytseradio IRC channel next Friday during my show (10pm-midnight Eastern time), & I'll be playing all of Black Utopia..come by & say hi to him if you get a chance :)

The full story of Nightmare Cinema can be found on the DT faq...and is their version of Suicide Solution available anywhere?

Well I think there is.. on the Dream Theater tourography for that Japan show, it says after they played "Perfect Strangers" they played "Suicide Solution". But on this bootleg, it is "Perfect Strangers" then "Anna Lee" then "Metroplis Pt 1.". Well with Metropolis Pt 1., they play most of the song then Petrucci and Derek break into some solo crazyness.. anyways, after a while, it breaks into this punk cover... fuck i have no clue what the hell Dream Theater did. Then after the cover is over, they finish Metropolis Pt 1. haha.

I love Planet X and Derek's new solo album is great too. He's made such "progress" since getting the ass from DT that I'm starting to think it was the best thing they could have done for him.

But I am curious as to what his development would have done for DT if they'd just given him more time.

Didn't Derek choose to leave DT himself? As far as I know, he thought that DT wasn't going in the direction he wanted to go, so he resigned.

For immediate release:

Dream Theater changes keyboard player

It is with much personal sadness that Dream Theater announce their decision to part ways with keyboardist Derek Sherinian.

Drummer Mike Portnoy: "Derek's contributions to the band both musically and personally over the last 4 years is something that we will always treasure and we will all miss.
He will always be a part of the Dream Theater family."

"With the recent release of our live CD & video, it seemed the right time to close this chapter and begin a new one..."

His replacement will be Jordan Rudess, who was once a touring member of the Dregs and has recently collaborated with Mike Portnoy & John Petrucci in their Liquid Tension Experiment project.

"After our experiences of working with Jordan in LTE, we came to the decision that his playing, writing and personality was more representative of where we would like to take Dream Theater into the 21st century."

"We wish for nothing but the best in the world for Derek as we hope to always remain friends with him. We're sure that he will continue to succeed in the music business as he always has, and wish him luck with whomever he decides to play with next."
