Canadian metal / music legend Devin Townsend has checked in with the following update:
“Hey everyone,
So, The Moth: I’m just finishing my final tour and about to dive into the mix—the actual mix—of the official Moth album. But before you hear the final version, I wanted to let you know that the Moth livestream has been a real success. It’s a testament to the incredible team that pulled off what often felt impossible.
Originally, we were set to end the stream on May 28th. But due to popular demand and renewed interest from our amazing audience, we’ve decided to extend the viewing period for one final month, at a discounted price.
So, for this last extended month, anyone who’s been curious about what we achieved live (before the release of the final album) can still watch it—for just €14.99. And if you already purchased a ticket, of course, you can continue to watch it during this final month as well.
Although I won’t be touring for a long, long while, I’m filled with more ideas than ever, and after a well-earned vacation, I look forward to sharing what’s next.
The Moth is literally the bridge between my past and my future, and I’m so grateful for your continued support. If you’ve been meaning to check it out, now’s your last chance!
Thanks eternally.”
After a decade in the making, Devin Townsend’s new composition, The Moth, tells the story of the human experience from birth to death. Together with the symphony orchestra, Noord Nederlands Orkest, the narrative is brought to life by an impressive seventy musicians, a sixty-member choir, and his own band (which includes Mike Keneally, Pete Rinaldi, Darby Todd, and James Leach).
Best known for his groundbreaking metal, progressive rock, and ambient music, Devin Townsend has pushed the boundaries of genre across his 30-year career and established an unparalleled artistic legacy.
The performance can be streamed on demand with unlimited replays through the On Air Events website, mobile, and TV apps until June 28, 2025.
It was announced in September 2024 that on Thursday, March 27, the lifelong work of visionary musician, composer, and producer Devin Townsend would unfold in De Oosterpoort in Groningen, performing the rock opera, The Moth, together with the Noord Nederlands Orkest.
Initially, this show was planned as a one-off exclusive, only to be performed in Groningen, Netherlands. A second show was added for March 28th. It was also livestreamed.
Townsend issued the following statement when The Moth shows were announced:
“I can’t wait to make this happen with you there. It’s the first big performance like this that I’ve done post-pandemic. I highly welcome you to come to this. It’s a world-exclusive performance.
After years and years of doing this, to finally have the opportunity to write a musical, to write an opera and to perform it as a world exclusive with one of the finest orchestras and choirs in the world is beyond a dream come true. And I assure you that the work that I’ve done on The Moth, it’s intense.
The Moth is a solo vocal performance, and I intend to be in the best form that I can to be able to pull that off for you. This career has been so full of highs — and lows, but highs — and this one promises to be the most prestigious of all events that I’ve done.”
Townsend is renowned for his groundbreaking fusion of metal, progressive rock, and ambient music. With a career spanning more than 30 years, he has pushed the boundaries of musical genres and collaborated with world-famous orchestras, establishing an unparalleled artistic legacy.
For his latest project, Townsend teamed up with the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra and composed The Moth, a ‘rock opera’ he has been working on for years, which represents his lifelong ambition. The Moth tells the story of the human experience from birth to death, comparable to the transformation of a caterpillar into a moth. It symbolizes the human quest for meaning and offers perspectives on the fear of death through analogy and narrative. Ever since Townsend witnessed large musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar and Phantom of The Opera in the 1970s, he has seen this project as his calling.
The Moth was in the making for over a decade, and Townsend has been building towards it for 30 years. He will shared the stage at De Oosterpoort in Groningen with no less than seventy musicians from the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, a sixty-member choir, and his own band, which included Mike Keneally, Joseph Stephenson, Darby Todd, and James Leach.
