Wow... Devin is my hero, but this video in particular is a great insight into the constant creative dilemma of mastering a skill only to subsequently become bored with it. I think that defines "paralysis by analysis" in the sense that he deems shred guitar to be "pointless" or compositionally "fuck all," even though he's great at it and actually does some amazing and inventive licks while simultaneously disparaging the whole style. It's crazy he can even DO that... and that is really the essence of his bizarre genius.
I relate to this dilemma and went through a period of creative analysis and self doubt recently, being completely burned out on metal actually, only to finally decide that there is sometimes nothing more gratifying than taking something you're good at and expanding it around the edges, rather than trying to constantly reinvent yourself or make things incredibly difficult for no reason. I've reached a point where I enjoy metal and all music more than ever as a result - I'm less critical and more accepting.
All of my favorite records are cheesy, all of the records ever made are cheesy, you can't eliminate it, because the true essence of cheese is taking a stance or an angle on something - without caring what anyone else thinks. And if you try to cater to some perceived demographic, it's even worse! It's always possible to make fun of music, and there's no escaping the fact that anything truly great can also be parodized easily.
