Anthony Spangler of the Star-Telegram has issued the following report:

The estate of slain metal guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott should be split evenly between his brother and father, according to court documents filed by the family Thursday in Tarrant County.

Abbott, 38, former guitarist of PANTERA, was fatally shot Dec. 8 at a Columbus, Ohio, nightclub while playing with the band DAMAGEPLAN. Four other people were fatally shot, including the band's bodyguard and the gunman, who was killed by a police officer.

Although Abbott didn't leave a will, the family's attorney, Steve McClure, said there is no infighting over the estate.

"He reiterated to just about everybody that he didn't have a will because he didn't want to give anyone a reason," he said. "These are class folks and you're not going to see them at the courthouse fighting over nickels and dimes."

The estate is estimated at $700,000 — with his 4,230-square-foot Dalworthington Gardens home valued at $450,000 and his personal property listed at $250,000 — although the value of any copyrights he may own was not specified.

The probate petition also requests that Abbott's older brother, Vinnie Paul Abbott, 40, be named administrator of the estate.

Jeff Rasco, Darrell Abbott's business manager and accountant, said Vinnie Paul Abbott, DAMAGEPLAN drummer and an ex-member of PANTERA, played at a tribute concert in Chicago on Wednesday to benefit a memorial fund for the shooting victims. It was the first time he played the drums publicly since his brother's death, Rasco said.

Darrell Abbott's girlfriend, Rita Sue Haney, also attended the concert, Rasco said. Haney, whose address in court documents is listed as Darrell Abbott's home, is not named as a beneficiary of the estate. She could not be reached for comment.

"It's a little preliminary to talk about specifics, but Rita's going to be provided for," Rasco said. "Darrell knew her since the third grade."

According to court documents, the family is asking the probate court to name Vinnie Paul Abbott the administrator of the estate because it is "necessary to recover damages due the estate."

The Abbotts have not filed a wrongful death lawsuit, but Tuesday's court filing is a necessary step before claims can be filed, Rasco said.

"It's an awful thing to have to deal with the death of your brother or son," he said.

I think those numbers might be personally understated so that everyone doesn't come crawling out of the woodwork with bullshit stories of how Dime owed them $$$, or promised them swag, help, etc. Or worse yet, some cum dumpster doesn't come looking for money claiming Dime fathered her ilk.

The real estate value might be right.... I don't know because I only know the market in NY, NJ, and CT (my old man's a realtor).

I have a feeling that the $250K doesn't include bank savings, investments, publishing, etc.

But yes, the recording industry is a big buttfuck to the artists.

i wouldnt mind 700 000 in assets, lets face it,he was a very generous person, just imagine the amount of money he spent on booze alone,i would say he did very well outta the business which says alot these days, there were 3 other band members dont forget.

Yeah, but also think about how much $$$ he DIDN'T spend on booze, because it was in his contract rider.

I think Johnny Ace is right, publishing royalties and what not, this is a "low ball" estimate.

Actually the story admits that it does not count any copyrighted material he owned, ie his songs. His estate is worth a ton more than stated.

You have to hide inherited $$$$$$$$. Uncle Sam will take an assload if not. Just went thru it '02 when my last grandparent passed on. Thank you Dad and Uncle Steve for hiding it in my bank account :D

First of all his house wasn't that big, second lots of people have "big houses" doesn't make them millionares fuck for all we know he was probably still paying the mortgage for that place. The man was killed playing at a cheap club in a small town, think about that.

Dude, the article says that the $700K does NOT include ANY copyrights. That means any money Darrel has gotten from ASCAP or whatever is not being included in his fortune. Besides, I would kill for the chance to rock out like he did and have $700k worth of shit to do it. I mean, I do it now, but I'm only worth about -$2,000.

after reading a lot about the abbott brother's there is a lot more than meets the eye, they loved to gamble, rita spent a huge amount of money on a failed tanning machine business,to the point where dime bag confesses to rex he thinks he may be broke, the father also was getting a huge cut of royalties for cfh and vulgar even though he had nothing to do with it at that point, they didn't want to sue their dad so he paid them back substantial amount of money but probably wasn't as much as they deserved,id love it if vinnie wrote a book, its good to hear all the different stories etc.
