DIMEBAG RIP

The first time I drank whisky was with Dime.

It was at the Sydney Music expo in the mid 90's. Washburn had just started making the first Dime signature series and he was there doing some promo.
My brother and I got a shit load of stuff signed and got pocketfuls of free guitar picks to boot. After about an hour of so one of the roadies hands Dime a bottle of George Dickel No. 12 Whiskey. I yelled out "Dime, give us a shot!" and being the generous guy in which he was yelled in reply "Yeah, but me first dude!" then he promptly took a big swig from the bottle then passed it on to me an my brother. We each took a swig then passed it on to the rest of the crowd (Most of which, including my bro and myself, were around the age of 16-17). My brother then managed to get a hold of the empty bottle and got it signed.

It now sits in a glass cabinet at my brothers place.

That's a fuckin sick story.

It's one of my most treasured memories. At the signing he was just as enthusiastic to meet his fans as they to meet him. He was and still is a total Legend (The other Aussies on the board know what I mean). Also from what I've heard, for Dime it wasn't anything special. He was the kind of guy that would do anything to make the people around him feel comfortable.

This has made it all the more confounding that he would be the object of someone's scorn. It might sound harsh but if it was Phil that was killed it wouldn't have really surprised me. But to kill one of the friendliest, down to earth and most talented mother-fukkers that have ever walked the earth is just too baffling and pain full to try and comprehend.

I haven't really met him, or even seen him in real life, but ive heard that he had this "Drink it, or wear it"-policy, which meant that if he gave you a drink, and you didnt drink it, he'd throw it on you! :kickass:

R.I.P. Dime!

Met him once at a signing at the NAMM show in 2000. Was super cool, very friendly to people in spite of looking totally hung over, wearing sunglasses, and with a line of fans looping around the convention center. Nobody was as big as Dime at NAMM.

Its times like this I wish I could get ahold of my buddy who sang for Crosseyed. Dude went by the name Johnny O, from Arlington Texas and was always talking about partying back in the day with Dime at a little blues bar. I heard so many stories about Dime shreddin acoustic guitar style 12 bar blues, shootin pool, pools of shots, bar fights, all kinds of crazy stuff... My own story might not be as exciting but I got to meet the guy at a signing in Noblesville Indiana the day before ozzfest, can't remember what year though, I think '99. We (band I was in at the time Tribe Sick) waited in line from like 9am TRIPPING BALLS on way too many hits of acid... I'll never forget the sound of cattle and the feeling of my skin crawling off when "You've Got To Belong To It" played on the stereo. I will never forget both Dime and Vinnie complementing my 3x5' confederate flag they wrote their names on that day and the cigarette box of party favors we gave to them as a gift for years of inspiration. Phil had to be carried out to the signing table and literally have his hand picked up and placed on the table by security...dude was just BLOWN out of his skull. I'll also NEVER forget walking outside after and holding up my freshly signed flag all excited and realizing I was standing next to about 3 or 4 lanes of dominantly "black" traffic...
I don't know if it was a coincidence my buddy's got a gun pulled on their car driving home along the interstate...
The next day when Pantera took stage, Phil and the guys gave a thanks to "whoever gave us the weed and sh*t" saying "it knocked us on our ass last night".
We went nuts cheering because we knew what we gave them the day before.....
looking back now its possible that anyone else could have given them a box full of drugs at the signing as well but I like to think it was something special anyway.
