So, anyone here made their own FX/amps??? I'm doing microelectronics at uni so I've kinda got a bit of knowledge on that sorta stuff, but designing them myself is a bit out of reach atm. Eventually I want to make my own professional quality amp, which would be kickass cos then if I don't like something I can just change it.

Post any makes/fixes or even stuff you would like to do but dont know how. Imo this is one of the most interesting dark corners of music.

If you've taken any basic electronics courses, you should be familiar with filter circuits. these are basically FX boxes. bandpass filters function like an EQ box. if you look at other simple filters, it's not hard to find a match for delay, chorus (delay of 0), phaser (should be self explanatory), etc. as for amps, that would delve into the realm of analog electronics (at least when I was taught it). It is more complex, but functions on the same principles. Next year I plan to do just this - design an amp- for my Senior design project before my degree.

Yeh I plan on doing the same thing for my degree. I've just started my 2nd year and its a 4 year course.

We havent really done much with filters appart from briefly going over the basic 4 types (high/low pass, band stop/pass), but what we have covered other cool stuff like opamps with negative feedback and various diode circuits..... so I could probably make some kind of distortion and maybe even a sawtooth effect with a peak detection circuit.....its just that they would be really basic and crap sounding without the advanced knowledge of how to make them decent. I look at existing circuits and I can see what is generally going on, but for most stuff there is additional stuff that i'm unsure about which i presume i might learn later on in my degree.

I'm not really into this, but I remember coming across this page which outlines a number of different distortion/overdrive fx:
http://users.chariot.net.au/~gmarts/ampovdrv.htm

There might be other stuff on that site, but that's all I came across

Yeh that site is pretty cool. I'm a member of diyguitarist.com....and i think that page is linked from there. The owner of diyguitarist is full into making stompboxes and amps.....just check out the amount of FX he's made!!!!

WOw, thats a really cool site, I didnt know that the TS-9 and the SD-1 were almost the same thing..
I actually have a Marshall Drive Master and I never noticed this: "I like this pedal for its howling Marshall stack-like qualities with single note solos and power chords" its been a few years since I played it, I should dust it off and play around with it again..
