I think genres can be specific or as non-specific as you want them to be, so there can't really be too many, only as many as you want. If you only feel the need to classify things in the broadest terms, then you can. For example you could classify judas Preist as metal and noone would complain, you could also classify them as heavy metal or you could go further and say they are NWOBHM. If there are too many, you can just use the general ones, but the sub-genres are useful for those into the genre to classify bands more specifically.

I'm struggling to see how people creating new styles of music can lead to it becoming boring.

Yes subgenres are good for narrowing stuff down and I'm not saying it makes music boring. I'm just saying its boring having to know exactly what division of a subgenre it is. I just get bored of it. Thats all. Anyway its my opinion.

no, i don't. but then again, i don't care. i fuckin hate slamming or cornering bands into little boxes and categories. its so god damn annoying when a band takes a new approach or does something different and people get pissy just because they had been stapled to some specific genre before.

i think bands should be their own genres and be able to to take what direction they want, so no i don't think there are too many, but then again i think bands should make their own category.

I don't like useless genres, basically when someone creates a sound slightly different from a genre and then people have to make that one a new genre.

Theres too many subgenres, now saying a band is a certain genre is almost like saying they are good or bad. Because its just impossible to pick the one subgenre.

Nah, I don't think there's too many. Back in the 60's/70's styles like melodeath, progressive death, folk metal, grindcore and stuff like that wasn't around. Hell, in the 50's heavy metal hadn't even been invented. More subgenres simply offer more to people who are fussy about music ^_^ Although, the constant categorisation does slightly annoy me... and it annoys me more when they get it wrong. Oh well.

Yeah its really annoying, since so many people say something would be a different subgenre or genre that are similar you never even know if you are right.

Like if someone said ELP was techno. And another person says they're electronic, and another would say they're progressive. But I'd just say they're Rock and get on with my life.

Back 40 years ago, you would say something is Blues, Rock, Heavy Metal, or Classical and there really wouldn't be much arguing cause each sound was clear cut. But now styles are seperated by one or two different elements. Such as Pop-Punk and Punk, the only real difference is the vocal style.

I only hate fake genres that people invent. And I also hate sub-sub genres, especially people who only listen to 1 sub-sub genre.

I've met a guy who only listens to Brutal Death Metal and another guy who only listens to "Viking Death Metal"

Sub-subgenres are annoying. Made up genres are annoying too. Like Gore Metal.
