3 injured after jobless man drives car into schoolchildren, goes on hatchet rampage
UTSUNOMIYA -- Two children and an office worker were injured Friday morning after a man rammed his car into a group of schoolchildren on their way to school and attacked passers-by with a hatchet, police said.
Nanao Fujita, 64, is accused of attempted murder and violating the Firearms and Swords Control Law. Investigators said Fujita, who lives only about 10 meters away from the scene, frequently had trouble with schoolchildren.
At about 7:35 a.m., Fujita rammed his car into a group of children from Utsunomiya Municipal Yonan Elementary School who were on their way to school, local police said. In the incident, an 8-year-old boy was seriously injured and a 9-year-old girl suffered slight wounds.
Armed with a hatchet, Fujita got out of the vehicle and began to chase passers-by. A 26-year-old office worker who attempted to overpower Fujita suffered an 8-centimeter cut to his head. Several other men who were at the scene managed to apprehend him and handed him over to police officers. (Mainichi)
