Featured in a new interview with El Cuartel del Metal, to discuss Dream Theater’s new album, Parasomnia, keyboardist Jordan Rudess was asked about working with founding drummer Mike Portnoy, versus Portnoy’s replacement Mike Mangini, who was with the band between 2010 and 2023.

Rudess: “Their approach is very different. I would describe Portnoy’s playing as being very fluid, and very natural and musical, whereas somebody like Mangini, who is, again, one of the greatest drummers on the planet Earth — he can play shit that nobody else can play. It’s hard to say anything negative — you would never get me to say anything negative about either of them. And I’m lucky that I get to work with some of the best drummers in the world.

I think, maybe if I had to say anything, I think Mangini is definitely a real technician, in the sense that he’s extremely accurate. He can do things that no mortal can really do. And Mike (Portnoy) can play hard stuff too. He’s coming at it from, like, he’s not necessarily looking to play the hardest thing. He’s trying to really do whatever is part of the composition.”

Parasomnia marks the return of founding drummer, Mike Portnoy, who left the band in 2010 and was replaced by Mike Mangini. Portnoy shared the following message for the album release:

“Exactly one year ago (to the day!), Feb 7th, 2024, the five of us stood in the same room together for the first time in well over a decade…we then spent the majority of the year creating our first album together in 15 years. Today, we can finally share it with all of you.

We could not be prouder or more excited about what we created. We were so inspired being together again and feel we really rose to the occasion to create something special. Parasomnia represents everything that is classic Dream Theater, mixing tastes of the past with visions of the future…

We hope you enjoy this sonic experience. It is best enjoyed in your optimum listening environment..(preferably from start to finish like watching a film). But however you take it in, we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did making it.”
