Dream Theater Producer Edition

I've always thought the production on "Images and Words" and "Awake" was amazing. I'm still trying to appreciate "Falling Into Infinity." They seem to have changed their style on that album a bit. I haven't heard much after those three, but I've gathered that they have fallen into the loudness war trap like most everyone else.

I've heard "Metropolis Pt 2" and "Systematic Chaos" are amazing though. Any opinions? I intend to fill out my DT collection eventually.

"Metropolis Pt. 2" is a great concept album, obviously the concept being a story behind the song Metropolis from, "Images and Words".

Much like a Queensryche album, you need to listen to it all the way through in one sitting to really get it. This was actually my first DT album, and I'm glad it was. It's still one of my favorites.

I really dislike their new stuff though. Aspects of, "Train of Thought" were great but as a whole I felt like they were trying too hard. "Octavarium" harkened at times back their old way of writing, but the newer material just doesn't still well with me. "Systematic Chaos" is great if you don't listen to any other kind of music (lots of musical rip offs).

From what I've heard they haven't gotten back to what they were. I want to like their stuff, I just can't get the hype.

Meh, too bad the mix on this sucks. And of course with just stems you can't really do anything about it. Guitar is just nasally, lucky there's an awesome bass tone otherwise it would sound like utter shit (which it does in some sections anyway). Drums sound really weak.. like a live album without sample replacement.

@Slipkyes..
Ashes of the Wake is a terrible mix imo.. its all mids and nothing else. No bass, little highs apart from the cymbals. Guitars sound terrible. Sacrament is a pretty good mix, and I might get shot for this but their latest album has my favourite mix this year.

ashes and sacrament are both great productions, IMO

much better than wrath if you ask me

heretic heretic heretic heretic heretic heretic heretic heretic heretic heretic heretic heretic

ever cranked up the breakdown in walk with me in hell to ear splitting, eviction inducing volume levels?
FUUUUU

Well walk with me in hell is definitely a highlight of that album, probably the best song. I don't know maybe I'm just nuts, but I really enjoy the production on Ashes and was terribly dissapointed after various listens of Sacrament, probably should give it another try now that it's been a long time. Haven't heard Wrath yet, will check it out, this band really kick ass. Although I don't think they will ever top the BESTIALITY of an album that is Burn The Priest and don't think they want to, they definitely left that style behind many years ago.

Way off topic there, Dream Theater is great, can't wait to hear the new album

ToT is a great album marcus :p

ill be gettin this, i have everything of DTs and i dislike a cpl of albums and i basically collect producer edition releases anyway so sounds good, know the price on it?

For the whole box set I assume it will be in between the £50-£75 mark. Bit like the Metallica box.
