Kind of off topic, but not really....

This has to be the worse "album preview" or "single release" ever in the history of music. Not in terms of the song (still havn't even heard the fucking thing) but just in the sense of how it was released..

A) first preview of it was on usatoday.com (wait what?), who as far as I can tell (I'm in canada) does not allow users from other countries to view it's media content.

B) The band realizes the mistake, and posts song on some other site stating it'll be available in most countries over the next few hours. I just tried right now and still can't hear it.

C) some smart fan, realizing there's a shitload of people who can't hear the fucking song, puts it on youtube. Less then an hour later, WMG pulls it down for copyright infringement, including the link in this thread.

Seriously like what the fuck happened?

They want to release it on a proper place like the label (roadrunner?) channel for marketing reasons.

The guitar riffs are pretty cool, I dig. Too bad the tone is getting worse and worse and muddy and worse.

Is it just me, or is the mastering pumping all over the place? Listened to it on another site and it was honestly making my head hurt.

It was posted as a soundcloud link which should be able to be played by everyone (at least it worked for me in Greece).

Mix is absolute balls, as are most Dream Theater releases. But dang.. if this is indicative of the rest of the album, this will be the first DT album I buy since Train Of Thought! Fingers crossed!

Loving the drumming on this one. Especially Mangini's tom fills. And dat guitar solo! :worship:

Yea, the snare sound seems out of place to me, but after a couple listens I'm getting used to it. Dream Theater has never released anything I would consider a reference mix (with the exception of some of JP's guitar tones). Their last album's mix was too dark in my opinion, but at least this track has more brightness to it. Whatever, I'm here for the music.

Bumpity bump.

The new album is streaming in full here: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/n...prog-metal-in-dream-theater-premiere-20130916

Am I the only one eating this up? Really digging the music direction. I'm a huge fan of Rush and there are obvious nods to them throughout the album. And you can actually hear John Myung haha! The mix, as mentioned earlier, is a little weird at times. But I appreciate the fact that it actually sounds like a band playing this shit. :worship: I'm also getting major Mark V GAS.

I listened to the entire stream earlier in the week and had the same thoughts that you have on the Rush nods. But it's also the fact that at times this really sounds like a throwback to their earlier releases at times, I hear a little Awake/Falling Into Infinity vibe at times and even some Scenes from a Memory feeling on some tracks.

I suspect that some that have a liking for a heavier DT are going to have issues with the album, but for me it's sounding pretty good so far upon just the one listen all the way through.

Really liking it. It's so much better than the wannabe heavy stuff they were doing towards the end of Portnoy's tenure. Definitely a throwback to the earlier more melodic DT sound, which I can definitely get behind.

First listen to the full album was quite dissapointing, everything sounds really disconnected to me, the intro doesn't flow at all into The Enemy Inside, all songs are basic generic 6 minute DT songs with average vocals and nothing standing out, and Illumination Theory doesn't really get to me, that middle part was like "ok we need to stretch this song out, you, orchestra guys, play something cute for like 5 minutes while we figure out something to follow the song with". It does have some cool parts, and Enigma Machine sounds pretty cool, and I also thought ADoE was lame at first listen and now I love it, so I'll have to dig in some more to see if I finally "get" it, I'm a huge fan and love all the albums so I owe it to myself to keep trying.

I didn'nt like the album very much on the first listen, maybe I was tired that day or I dunno.. on a bus ride
Then the day after, it was just so damn great.
Growing on me and fast

However, even tho it's beautiful, I don't really like the long boring keyboard parts, especially on Illumination Theory

It's not a 22 minutes long song, it's some 8 minute + 3 minute + 8 minutes and specially the last 3 minutes-long ending (a big WTF).

Oh yeah, the "first" ending to IT was laaaaaaame and uninspired, I was like "that's the end of the album?? that was the ending of a Dream Theater album? No tears, goosebumps, feeling of awesomeness that every other DT album gives??" and then the "extra" ending came up and it was even worse. What were they even trying to do there, honestly?

Aha, another ToT fan! :headbang:
