Drum N Bass appriecation thread

Squarepusher is a seriously good bass player, his music is a superb blend of jazz and drum and bass. I love "Feed me wierd things".

If anybody is a fan of Jaco Pastorius, Squarepusher is music which you will like.

I also love LTJ Bukem's stuff. Jazz based again with Jungle/drum and bass rhythms. Adam F and Roni Size are nice too.

Basically I like drum and bass which has some thought or intelligence put into it.

Squarepusher is amazing. Been getting into a lot of it lately.. he has this style of contrasting very beautiful open melodies with these drum'n'bass breaks with layers upon layers of drums.

He uses a lot of weird production techniques too. For instance in 'Dimotane Co' he uses a resonance filter (or just EQ? hell it may even be varying degrees of phasing) as a musical tool, changing where its swept to each bar.

Aphex Twin are good too, but I need to give them more time before I say anything more about them. I find it pretty weird that their music isn't utterly slammed like Prodigy stuff.

James is pure 100% oldschool thrash :D
nah..i listen to too much Jazz, Fusion, Classical, and even rock and pop to be rated that pure on the "thrash scale". AT's music is dark and i like that.. but the "songs" are more like "ambience" to me.... they drone on and on and don't go anywhere, they just "are". that's enough for some people to call Mr. James a genius. personally, i just think he's a reasonably clever, musical guy who knows how to use his synths and samplers to layer textures to create moods and ambience... but a genius? :err:

to each his own though, and to be honest i sometimes throw on Selected Ambient Works, Vol. 2 when i'm doing the tidying up or reading, but by and large i want to hear songs... my 2¢.

That's cool. I think it really takes a certain kind of person to really appreciate ambient work as 'songs' in their own right. I think it's ultimately the most rewarding sort of music, so I try to adjust myself and appreciate as much of it as I can, even if it takes a while.

But anyway James, in case you haven't heard any Squarepusher, I would highly suggest it! The tracks he makes usually have an ambient vibe, but actually go somewhere. All round mellow, nice music.
