Drum tuning videos from recording mag.

Ok just watched all the videos and I would say they are alright but without the article (that I did read) your really missing alot that they said.

such as:

Common tom tuning is 4ths (equivalent to the distance between ding and dong in the song the witch is dead).

However I guess john bonamn tuned his toms chromatically.

The article was good information. The drumset came in with the bassdrum heads in reverse (and the drummer didn't want to change them WTF?). The snare apparently was really out of tune and had shitty heads. And as you can hear the drums were really fucking out of tune.

Good info a bit basic but good.

Heh, that's exactly how I do it right down to the wax. However, I prefer both my heads tuned to the same pitch. Makes em roar instead of ring.

Yeah I didn't agree with the bottom head tuning either. It was a good vid though, when I tune drums I wasn't aware of the issue of seating the head. I just tightened it down tapped it then loosened it and started tuning but pushing it with your hands seems like a better way to do it.

I was amazed at the night and day difference in the sound on those mp.3 though.

The way he does it is properly done.
But also it is very important to note that tuning a drums top or bottom head is for each drummer himself on what he wants and as long as the engineer can do any good with. I personally don't like the tuning he used on his drum, but he used the proper technique.

Yeah i was just about to mention that the final tuning/pitch isn't something i'd use...

...maybe it's my lack of knowledge in drum tuning.

The end result sounded terrible, but he seemed to use the 'correct' method to go about it, so the videos were educational, thank you.

Well here is some more information from the aticle these videos are supposed to acomany:

The band that had the drumset had never recorded before (even though well rehearsed according to the article).

The drumset is old, like from the 70s old.

According to the engineer the drums were usable once they were tuned "not perfect" but workable for the project.

The drummer sounded like a total fucktard (his bass drum heads were on backwards and he was adament about keeping them this way, his heads also were not tentioned right, there were ripples in the heads).

The snare drum showed up with a batter head on the bottom and broken original snares.

So all in all I think they did well for what they had to work with (a moron drummer and a less than stellar drumset).

I wonder why they'd do a drum tuning tutorial with bad gear. It makes a bit more sense to show people the full scope of what's available with good tuning technique.

Those YouTube vids you linked to are great. It's a bit of a shame that the guy hasn't done the snare ones yet though.

I suppose. Although how many newbs are going to be using kits from the 70s? I mean there's a fairly distinct line between 'budget' and 'outright shit'.

I have to say I got a lot more out of those youtube videos you linked, so thanks for that. Once again it's a shame that he never seemed to have got around to doing a snare tuning tutorial, as they tend to be the trickiest (at least that's what the drummers I work with tell me).
