Edge of Sanity - best to worst

1. Crimson
1. Purgatory Afterglow
3. The Spectral Sorrows
4. Infernal
5. Unorthodox
6. Until Eternity Ends
7. Cryptic
8. Nothing But Death Remains

As you can see, I can't decide on number one. However, every EoS album is worth owning and they are one of my favorite bands of all time. Even Cryptic, which perhaps shouldn't even be considered one of their albums because there is no Swano, is pretty good.

On that note, Dan recentely mentioned that if it were up to him, his Moontower album would have been the EoS album after Infernal. If you throw that in the mix, it would be number 3 on my list.

I have Moontower. It's good, I need to revisit it, but not as outstanding as Crimson IMO.

Was Crimson an album that just stands head and shoulders above the rest of their catalog (even though all the EoS albums are still great)?

I only have Crimson, and it's awesome. Definately one of the better CD's in my collection.

All the other EOS stuff I've heard hasn't really interested me much. I don't know if I've just heard the wrong songs, but they don't really sound very much like Crimson at all, and nowhere near as good.

Never knew that about Moontower, and wouldn't have guessed it since Dan played every instrument on the album...one of his finest achievements IMO...

Moontower is good but it's a bit too 'proggy/keyboardy' for me. But yeah, it's not bad, but it 'aint Crimson.

And the best thing about Crimson is that it actually keeps getting better each time you listen to it.

Bumpity boo! :)

I can't rank them because I only have Crimson (and just purchased it last week but already am falling deeply in love with it), but I'm excited for this!

Nice - we need to get an Edge of Sanity review up at some point. I'm still only at Crimson in my collection, but based on this thread, it looks like Purgatory... is the next one to get (other than Crimson II of course).

Yeah Purgatory Afterglow will be part of my next overindulgence at The End, this is a group I've been meaning to get into for some time now.

So I've listened to Crimson II a few times now... not quite sure what to think of it. I like it okay, but it hasn't struck me like the first one did on the first listen. That could be a good sign, but it's too early to tell.

Two things I HATE already: the drum tone is terrible, it sounds like a drum machine with too much reverb. Thankfully the playing is top notch.

Also, 49 tracks!?!? Fuck that! I know the reasoning is to keep file-sharing whores from spreading the album around, but if someone wants, they are just going to number the tracks in order and download them as such. Just like any other form of copywrite protection, why does the consumer have to suffer?

Oh yeah, speaking of that, does anybody know why Purgatory Afterglow has 10 blank tracks after the last song?

Crimson II is not as good as Purgatory Afterglow or Crimson I. It's not a bad album though.

I mentioned in another thread that my main dislike is the lack of clean vocals. IMO, Swano sounds his best during those clean passages because he's calmed down his vibrato, and it's a shame he only sings cleanly twice (I think?).

I'll def give it a few more spins though without doubt.

I remember you mentioned that, I didn't remember where though so I put my comments here. :)

Yeah, his clean vocals are good, and there are not nearly enough instances.

I need to give it more of a chance, but the first one just blew me away from the first listen and continues to get better. Oh how I remember that time when I first got Crimson I... way back in July of '03...

Amen. Crimson I is a breed apart. In hindsight, it really didn't need a follow up - although, I'm not denying how great it was for another EoS release. But Swano also said he would never growl again. I dunno - I think because he said he wasn't going to growl, I got excited for lots of his clean vocals...

...flame me for this, but I really can't help but smile when Swano growls - especially on Purgatory Afterglow. You know how death growls get referred to as "cookie monster" vocals? Well, to me, and all my last 20 months of watching Sesame Street, I have to say that Swano comes closest to actually sounding like that fucking muppet.

I'll admit I haven't listened to it as much as I'd like to. I've just been swimming in a million cds I want to listen to. So far, I like it alot. It's too early for me to compare it to other albums.

I know a lot of people say Swano is their favorite death metal vocalist, but I think he's a much better songwriter and drummer (the first Bloodbath CD he's incredible behind the kit!).

I was excited for Peter Tagtgren to sing on Crimson II as well as lots of clean vocals too, but neither happened.

One thing I do really like is the last few seconds of Crimson II, the way it has that creepy keyboard crescendo as if saying "the end...?" Although I wouldn't really want to see a part III.
