Dan Swanö – who has not only had a long tradition of co-operating with mix/mastering roles for many CMR artists like Asphyx, Skeletal Remains or Insomnium, but also last became musically active in metal with the band Witherscape via CMR (Two albums and a mini album between 2013 and 2016) and also released his latest Nightingale album Retribution in 2014 on the IOM label – checked in with the following comprehensive comments and insights about the third chapter of the catalogue’s re-issue campaign:
“Chapter III is finally here! I couldn’t be happier with the way they all turned out, both sonically and visually! Three of the four releases are focused on songs written in 1995 and 1996 and now some thirty years later, I am happy to say that all these old tunes have never sounded better and the record that’s “only” 22 years old, got the biggest sonic boost that any of the re-issues will have!
Edge Of Sanity – “Crimson”:
A pretty straight forward remastering job. Some of the ear-fatiguing nastiness in the upper midrange was smoothed out a bit to make sure it can be cranked even louder! The remix is as usual something I am damn proud of and spent way too much time on, but it paid off in spades for this one as well. The idea was to make the best possible version of the original. Not to adapt it to current trends or try to make it into something it’s not, just bring out what’s there on the original analog master tape and restore stuff that got wrong the first time around. One of those things to was to restore all the syllable sounds from the vocals that I somehow got lost on the original version (Super fun job. Not!). All the clean vocal performances have been cleaned up and very transparently brought to the intended pitch, taking the softer parts on the album to a completely new level. All you need to know about the remix process can be found in a chapter of the extensive liner-notes in the Deluxe CD edition booklet…
Nightingale – “The Breathing Shadow”:
This album was not super complicated to remaster. It sounded pretty good to begin with. I finally had the chance to rebalance the levels between certain parts and remove some clicks and other unwanted artefacts. The bonus CD was a lot of work though and has some awesome remixes/reinterpretations on it. “Nightfall Overture” have a more stripped-down vibe and is now, for me, equally awesome to the 2005 re-recording on “Nightfall Overture”. “Sleep…” sounds completely different. More inspired by New Order than Sisters of Mercy in this version. Since I already had made a “heavy metal version” of “The Dreamreader” for the “Nightfall Overture” record, I decided to go in the opposite direction for this version. It’s now a piano and vocal version and I love it to bits! “Higher than the Sky” is now a full-on dark metal song! Inspired by what I did to Sisters of Mercy’s “Lucretia My Reflection” as a solo artist. This version would have worked well on the Odyssey “Reinventing the Past” album, it’s got that kind of vibe. Some parts that were “shoe-gaze dreamy” are now full-on atmospheric doom! There are no big changes to “Recovery Opus” Just a bigger guitar tone and the vocals are now spot-on! “The Return to Dreamland” has the same electric bass/synth-free/stripped down vibe as “Nightfall Overture”. The remaining tracks from the “The Breathing Shadow” album are represented by live versions and in one case, the original version; “Tint gör ont” (“Alone?”) it’s from 1979. Nope, it’s not a typo. It’s nineteen seventy-nine. I was six years old (banging away on the organ), my older brothers Dag (Drums/Vocals) and Ingjald (Bass) and I had the band Fordz together and this version is from one of our recorded rehearsals, in the same room where I would later write and endless stream of songs, many re-released in this re-issue campaign!
Edge Of Sanity – “Crimson II”:
The remastering for this one was the hardest one to get right this far in the re-issue campaign, and I doubt anything else down the line will cause me as much headache as this one did. Since the original is so odd sounding, none of the “usual tweaks” worked so I decided to do the remix first and make that one sound like I always dreamt the original would have sounded like, and only then match the original to the tone of the remix. The idea worked incredibly well and now I can listen to the original version and really enjoy it! The remix, or should I say “the resurrection” on CD2 is, to me, by far the greatest achievement of this whole re-issue campaign. I knew I had a backup of the album on an old hard drive, but exactly what was on those files I did not know. It turns out that the backup process failed, and a large number of the files contained only digital silence from 2003. Super. For this album to be remixed, a lot had to be re-recorded first. There’s a deep dive into this process in the liner-notes, but the short version is. Since the tight deadline didn’t allow for Mike Wead and Simon Johansson to re-record their stuff on the original, all missing lead guitars (including some of my own) were re-recorded by the super talented Australian guitar player Andy Rose (TiO). The few lines of missing lead vocals and some backing vocals were re-recorded by Brandon Howe (Mother of Graves). A part of narration was redone by Paul Kuhr (Novembers Doom) and some missing drum loops were replaced by live drumming from session player extraordinaire Peter Damin (Paradise Lost, Another Life, Second Sky and many more). Mike Low went through the arduous process of sorting out the drums and reprogramming all the cymbals. All in all. It sounds so much better than the original release that it’s hard to fathom. If the album had sounded like this in 2003, I am sure the album would have made a whole other impact…
Nightingale – “The Closing Chronicles”:
This one was super complicated to remaster. I could never come to terms with the sound on the original version, but after lots of trial and error, I found the tweaks for each song that made them sound like they should have sounded all along. The bonus CD for this one is extra special since it’s got a brand-new recording on it plus one that is half original recordings, half new recordings on it. But first up on CD2 we have “gothed up” version of three songs I loved as a kid, and that I still love to this very day: “Before the Dawn” (Judas Priest), “C’est la vie” (E.L.P.) and “Return to Fantasy” (Uriah Heep). All three have been carefully restored from the best possible master, and I spent way too much time adding a hi-hat to these three tracks, since it was too low in the original mix. “Intermezzo (2025 Version)” is based on the original recording/arrangement of a song Dag Swanö recorded as Tom Nouga called “Fontän”. The first time me and brother did something together since the “Retribution” album, more than a decade ago. And when I found the drums/bass and almost all guitars from the 1996 recording of “Alive Again” on a master tape, the idea of a new version was born. You can read more about it in the massive liner-notes for the album, but in short, I finally have my dream version of this track that combines the original version and the “Recollections” track from the “Alive Again” album. All vocals are new, along with some guitars and all keyboards. Took forever, but worth every second. My personal highlight on any of the re-issues so far! All songs from the original album are represented with a live version, ranging from good to necro in sound-quality and from Sweden, via Germany and The Netherlands to the United States of America geographically! Then there’s the indie-pop flavored original version of “Steal the Moon”, created by yours truly under the monicker of Morion in 1993. Very danceable! I spent a small fortune on securing some previous unseen photographs of me, and there’s some previous unreleased photos from the recording session as well…”
Stay tuned for further news about this catalogue campaign by Edge Of Sanity and Nightingale coming soon.
