I posted it on another board to see if anyone could figure out what was going on... the plot seems simple in retrospect! The elevator exceeded maximum capacity, so the lizard shed his tail. I personally probably would have waited for the next elevator rather than mutilate myself, even if I did have a regenerating tail.
