what body wood is your guitar, as that would be my main concern. if its mahogany id stick the 81 in the bridge

ive always lost the clarity with the 85 in the bridge on a mahogany body, thats just my preference though!

Same here... you lose tightness in the low end and clarity in the low mids with the 85. Fatter, more organic, just not quite as tight.

I have an 85(bridge) installed in my jackson, sounds good, but when you tune down beneath C, it really gets muddy;(
Thats what worries me as I tune down to B. I like the idea of the 85 in the bridge but if it gets muddy then maybe I should put the 81 in the bridge?? Mmmmm....

yer low tunings with the 81 on a mahogany body is the only way IMO
however i still love the sound of the 81 in my basswood esp, its a bit on the bright side for the standard tunings, but you need it for c and below, esp if your in Bb tuning!
the 85 will sound a bit more natural in standard tuning in alder and ash guitars id say (retains clarity and warmth), but dont take my word too much on that! again its just my opinion
