Enochian Crescent - Black Church

I first heard Enochian Crescent many, many moons ago as a juvenile criminal on Napster. Back then I can remember them being vaguely ridiculous, but altogether very entertaining. Fast forward to this year of our lord two thousand and six and we have Black Church. From the get go this album hits the spot for slightly extreme metal with enough variation to keep you interested, along with a head bang factor to keep you losing brain cells. Black Church crashes around all over the shop, from the gang vocals on Chalk Face, to the ripping guitar tone evident throughout the whole thing. In terms of momentum, Black Church is all one way traffic, as the material never really loses the sense of moderately quick pacing. The riffs are of particular interest, as they aren't all exactly in the same style. The odd "jazzy" chord gets in there somehow, to mess things up a little and the ridiculous vocals are entertaining in their own right.
Black Church is pretty good in terms of consistantly providing something to interest the listener, and as such songs don't really tend to stick out as highlights giving the album the feel of a single solid experience. Enochian Crescent were always pretty entertaining, and certainly these Finns could be described as wacky quite easily. In Black Church they've created an album that thrives on it's own demented irrelevance. This isn't to say it doesn't matter, but just under the surface you get a hint of something slightly deranged waiting to leap out and gibber madly in your general direction.
Despite all this, the most important thing to remember is as follows: this album is heaps of fun!
7/10
