Gone are the days when everyone agreed that Entombed could do no wrong. Inferno is a testament to the vestiges of talent that the band still possesses. Unfortunately, the said album doesn’t really measure up to my expectations.

“Retaliation” is a fitting track – it starts off slow and sludgy, like most of its counterparts. Even though the riffage is simplistic, it successes because it’s nothing short of arresting. Furthermore, the vocals iterate the following:
Put all my trust in liquor.
Now, that’s something I can agree with! To move on, “The Fix is in” is slightly monotonous, and pushes inane lyrics to the forefront. “Incinerator” is alluring enough; the sloppiness of double-bass drumming grated on my nerves, though. Nevertheless, the song was enjoyable. “Children of the Underworld” begins in a sort of brooding state, and plods along for approximately four minutes. Aggression intrudes about the 2:30 minute mark, much to my surprise and delight; the riffs get chunkier and the guitar solos are definitely of substance. “That’s When I Became a Satanist,” other than featuring an amusing title, is a fairly competent track. “Nobodaddy” traipses along into the piano-led “Intermission.” “Young & Dead” reminds us we’re listening to Entombed as it steals the scene from “Intermission.” “Descent into Inferno” is boring, but “Public Burning” is the converse, thanks to the tempo. “Flexing Muscles” is perhaps my favorite track because of the foreboding, introductory musicianship; the lyrical content is rather lame, however. “Skeleton of Steel” and “Night for Day” aren’t too notable.

The bonus disc, Averno, contains extra tracks, a cover which was originally performed by Stillborn, radio edits, and two music videos for “Retaliation” and “Albino Flogged in Black.” In sum, Inferno is a reasonable purchase for those of you that fancy Entombed. Casual fans, and everyone else, should promptly steer clear of this record, nonetheless.

Sorry to say, I think this about closes the door on Entombed for me. The production by Per Gunnefeldt is ATROCIOUS ! :yuk: Why would the band want to water their sound down this much?

They're a great bunch of guys, I talked to Alex recently, but I just can't ignore the facts any longer.
