Not sure how many Eric Johnson fans there are here, but I thought I'd throw out a recommendation to check out his new album, Up Close.

This song "Gem" has the instant hook and melody that reminds me of the first time I heard "Cliffs of Dover". Such a beautiful song, and his tone is AMAZING as usual... that typical dark Johnson sound. Love it!

Thanks for posting this! I'm a long time fan of EJ. One of the main reasons I bought my American Strat years ago. Though somehow, I was never quite able to play like him.

Actually, watch the very end of video interview #3 in my second post. It's apparently all in an angled mini Vox and a bottle of Armor All (without the cap).

Ahh, that's just because you werent using the right guitar cable Mark :tickled:

Damn it! NOW you tell me, after I sold my Strat??? :D

I don't think there's any other guitarist that can both inspire me to pick up my guitar and play, and to want to quit and throw all my guitars in the garbage, at the same time.

Hahaha :p Just watched all those vids. 3 things from me...

1. He picks very close to the bridge
2. The fuzz face is key to his distorted tone?
3. I'd like some info on how he sets his delays up generally

There must be a nice easy way in comparison to this mutha thucka....

I thought the very same thing! I now have major G.A.S. for that fuzz face
But I know it's also a combination of his playing style, those Fender Strats, and Marshalls.

The thing is though, EJ can play through any amp and any guitar, and he STILL is immediately recognizable. But yeah, that fuzz face is definitely part of the sound. In the videos, he didn't mention Dumbles. I guess he's not using those any more? He used those for years and was a big part of his sound.

For all of you interested in a Fuzz Face, make sure to get a germanium diode based Fuzz Face (or a clone, more affordably) or you won't get anywhere near the same tone. AnalogMan SunFace seems to be the clone that gets the most kudos, haven't used it myself though.

Huge EJ fan here as well, since 1990.

Thanks for the recommendation Shane!
