Really was thinking about this when i read the essential death metal thread but i wanted more than death metal. "extreme metal" includes Black/trash/death/doom....and so on....

Pick 1-25 albums that you think are a must have and i may do a poll after a week or two.

For me:

Opeth "all"
Dissection "both"
At the gates "Slaughter of the soul"
Necrophobic "The Nocturnal Silence"
Mörk Gryning "Tusen år har gått"
Setherial "Nord" and "Hell Eternal"
Dismember "Like an ever" "Indecent"
Entombed "Clandestine" and "Wolverine"
Lord Belial "Kiss the goat"
Naglfar "Vittra"
Unanimated "Ancient god of evil"
Merciless "unbound"
Dark funeral "Secres of the black arts"
Carcass "Heartwork"
Death "Human"
Dawn "Naer solfan går ner för"
Morbid Angel "Altars of madness"
Deicide "once upon the cross"
Grave "Soulless"
In Flames "Jester race"
Infestdead "Hellfuck" "Killing christ"
Paradise Lost "Icon" "Draconian"
Allegiance "Hymn till hangagud"

Of course there are many more that would deserve a honorable mention...

Ok...give some!

Come on we have had the essential black metal album thread, the essential death metal thread and now a combination of the two, for christs sake.

A combination PLUS all metalstyles out there. I wanna know what i missed. What albums i need to have. And it`s not for "christs" sake i do this.

There is to much death and black metal on this board and not enough doom. So I will contribute and not complain
Draconian times is a great choice, I wore my copy out and now it skips damnit.

I also think you should have
Anathema - Judgement - After 5 years of listening to Alt 4 and Judgement, i think the latter is the better of the two.
Theatre Of Tragedy - Aegis - Its one depressing album.
Moonspell - Wolfheart - The first doom album I fell for in a big way.

Venom - Black Metal
Ulver - Bergtatt
Bathory - Blood Fire Death
Death - Individual Thought Patterns
Deicide - S/T
Morbid Angel - Altars Of Madness
Emperor - Nightside Eclipse
Burzum - Hvis Lysett Tar Oss
Thergothon - Stream From The Heavens
Opeth - My Arms Your Hearse
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Abigor - Nachthymnen
Mercyful Fate - Dont Break The Oath
Evoken - Antithesis Of Light
My Dying Bride - Angel And The Dark River
Carcass - Heartwork
At The Gates - Slaughter Of The Soul
In Flames - Lunar Strain
Enslaved - Eld
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Mefisto - The Puzzle
Decapitated - Winds Of Creation
Sodom - Persecution Mania
Eucharist - Mirrorworlds
Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky

obviously a few of my choices could be questionable on the "extreme" part...but they were ones which helped pioneer everything to become "extreme" metal...so i put them in anyway.

Hmm...

Bathory - Self titled
Bathory - The Return
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Bathory - Blood Fire Death

This is probably the best narrowed down list this thread will see. Maybe it's because alot of these are my favs.

Opeth - MAYH, Still Life
Bathory - Blood Fire Death
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Deicide - Legion
Immortal - Pure Holocaust
Dark Tranquillity - The Gallery
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick
Cryptopsy - None So Vile
Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh

Red in the Sky is a very underrated album I think. First off...no one really sounded like at the gates then and the music was definitely up there with Atheist and Atrocity in terms of timing and technicality.

Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Emperor - ITNE, Anthems
Darkthrone - Panzerfaust
My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans, The Dreadful Hours
Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris
Arsis - A Celebration of Guilt
Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve
Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Necrophagist - Onset of Putrefaction
Origin - Origin, Echoes of Decimation
Nile - Black Seeds of Vengeance
Arcane Sun - Arcane Sun
Ulver - Bergtatt
Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness
