The latest in a series of reissues by Regain Records is Mirrorworlds from the Swedish death metal band Eucharist. Originally released in 1997, back in a bygone era when melodic death metal was just beginning to make its mark on the metal community, Mirrorworlds was definitely an album fit for its time.

The music is fast, raw and heavy with plenty of melody as evidenced in such songs as “With the Sun”, “Mirrorworlds” and the excellent “Dissolving”, which is an early precursor to the chant-like, slower, mid-tempo songs subsequently found in many melodic death metal albums. But Eucharist had the ability to mix it up a bit and not go overboard on the speed and brutality. “In Nakedness” is a song that features a guitar, an oboe and a crackling, popping sound that sounds like it comes from a vinyl album. “The Eucharist” is an instrumental with plenty of tempo changes and nifty guitar melodies and solos and it showcases the progressive elements of main songwriter and guitarist Markus Johnsson.

Markus also doubles as the vocalist of Eucharist and his singing is of a tortured and raspy soul similar to Tomas Lindberg when he was in At the Gates. Rounding out the recording line-up was Martin Karlsson on bass and Daniel Erlandsson (Yes, the same Daniel that is currently on Arch Enemy) on drums (the current line-up featues Henrik Meijner as a second guitarist).

Mirrorworlds is an excellent album that reminds us of a time when melodic death metal was fresh and vibrant. Even know, 7 years after its release it sounds much better than most of the stuff that has come out in recent years.
