Europe - War of Kings

Europe might as well change their name to Deep Sabbath! They sound like a mix of those two giants of the 70s and 80s now. I know the sugar melodies are long since history in this band but they've fully embraced the classic hard rock and metal sound now judging by these two songs. Not really my cup of tea though I'm sure many of you will like it.

Well, the first song Joey Tempest is trying too hard to be Dio and failing. That second song is pretty solid, tho.

they are actually doing their 1st tour of the States since 2004 (i think around there). At least these guys still put out new music...unlike Poison, Cinderella, and most of those other 80's bands. I saw them last time they came around, they put on a good show...i'm sure it will be this time around too.

I like them borh, and their last album was fantastic. People who judge this band only on The Final Countdown would be very surprised with what the majority of their songs sound like.

I don't really like either but strangely enough far prefer the first song over the second. He does try very hard like you said but it just doesn't seem to really work out. Both songs need much more melody for my taste. Nothing really memorable about either tune for me.

You didn't like 2006's Secret Society? Killer album IMO.

I like the new songs, wasn't too crazy about the bluesier previous album.

That first one is actually interesting to me, though you are right, doesn't sound like Europe of the old. I haven't cared much for their reunion albums. OK, somewhat plodding hard rock, ehh.. I know they probably won't ever write another Wings of Tomorrow, but one can hope..

Their disc "Last Look At Eden" was fantastic....the title track itself is one of their best tunes, IMO. All of their albums from "Start From The Dark" onward have been really strong. I'll be checking this one out when it's released.

I only know of Europe as the Final Countdown band. After reading some amazing reviews on PM-X, I decided to try this on Spotify. WOW! I was blown away. Someone there called it a long lost Deep Purple album and that's a great way to describe it. My CD just arrived and this may end up being one of my favorite disks of the year, from a band I had completely ignored for years.

If you like what you hear with War of Kings....all the ones they've done after getting back together are really good. Start From the Dark, Last Look at Eden, Secret Society, and Bag of Bones (this one IMO is probably the weakest of them all, but still good)

Agreed, although I consider Secret Society as the weakest of the new albums.

You should have seen and heard the audience during Europe's set on the MoR cruise. I think most were expecting the 80's pop version of Europe and instead the first two songs were from the new album. Played back to back and in your face hard rock. At the end of those two songs, there was a brief silence as the crowd took in what they just heard. Then I heard one patron gasp, "Wow"!

Of course, they went on to play some of their favorite pop songs ... with a little updated keys and guitars. But there was definitely a difference between the new and old songs. And so it went, back and forth, between the new and old. By the end, they may have startled the old fans but won them over.

Agreed, although I consider Secret Society as the weakest of the new albums.

For me Secret Sociery is the very best of the new ones, followed by War Of Kings, Start From The Dark, Last Look From Eden and Bag Of Bones.
