I've turned up here looking for inspiration.

I'm truly ancient compared to most metal fans, having been listening to the stuff since the late 70's.

From about the mid 80's I pretty much shut myself off from the metal scene, as it all became big hair and spandex, and that wasn't for me.

So for the last 30 years, I've been listening to (amongst much non-metal stuff) the same things I was listening to back then, which basically goes up to Tribute (Ozzy), and nothing much past that. Except for guitar virtuosos like Vai, Malmsteen and Vinnie Moore.

Anyway, a few months ago, someone suggest I give Vulgar Display of Power a try.

Holy freakin' Moly.

My eyes are opened. Some metal post 1987 is actually good! Who'd have thought it!

So of course I've worked my through Panteras in print catalog - and I suspect I wouldn't like their pre-Cowboys stuff so much anyway - and I'm looking for more.

I've tried some Meshuggah and Lamb of God. LoG I can get with - just about. I'm not keen on the weird Balrog-gargling-battery-acid-and-bolts vocals, and the Meshuggah ive tried is way over the top with that. The LoG I've tried is just about bearable.

I've also got Nola and DownII, and love those. Slightly gnarly vocals in places, but somehow Phil A gets away with it...

I've also been blown away by a few metal ontological maps as well - I had no idea there were so many sub-genres!

So I've got 30 years of catching up to do, and I'm looking forwards to some exploration! I think that for my personal taste, VDoP and CfH are going to be very, very hard to beat, though...

I'll mainly just be hanging out, reading reviews and news, and seeing what the score is.

Now, back to getting those Mouth for War riffs nailed down on my old geetawr...
