Naked On The Black Floor is proof that first impressions can be deceiving. The
album opens with some horrible generic dark techno which could throw some first-time
listeners off. It was probably not the best choice, as first impressions are very
important when getting into a group. The techno doesn't last too long, and the
power-progressive metal bursts forth like a newborn alien tearing it's way from the
stomach of it's victim... Synths are used creatively throughout the music to add that
very subtle space metal vibe, though the this debut from Event Horizon is far
from space metal...

The production is clear as a bell, and the musicianship is astounding, but the real
delight of Naked On The Black Floor is the performance of the vocalist. He is
like a grittier, manlier version of Dio with a very strong vibrato that emits complete
power and forcefully carves it's way through the music. His softer vocals are great
also, for those moments when the music calms down a tad. For an otherwise unknown
vocalist, this guy is good.

The song structure isn't like that of your general progressive metal group, but
instead has a set of chorus-like vocal sections throughout each song which lead up to
an actual chorus! The arrangements allow the musicians to have plenty of freedom and
room for the evolution of each song which leads to unexpected turns, or hooks.
Event Horizon is not an overly talented group - at least not on the record -
but they work well with what they display.

7.5/10
