Fantasy and/or Historical Fiction

Okay yobs, recommend me some stuff.

I've read all the

S M Stirling
George R R Martin
Bernard Cornwell
Jack Whyte
(Altho those last 2 have new ones coming out this fall)

I've just started Manda Scott's Dreaming the Eagle, the first in the Boudica Warrior Queen trilogy

And I'm done with Conn Igulden's Caesar series.

Where does an escapist lad now turn? People always mention Robert Jordan but then they say the series has really been dragging of late.

Dark Elf Trilogy

I just bought the first of Jack Whyte's Dream of Eagles series.... he's from my province!!! :kickass:

Yeah, R.A. Salvatore rights some good fantasy fantasy, if you want more realistic stuff.. try Wizard's First Rule (and the other 5 books ) by Terry Goodkind.

I'm not much of a reader at all, but I enjoyed The Hangman Crusade( I forgot the author...) which is a historical fiction about Reinhardt Heydrich.

I liked the first two Goodkind books back in the day
Terry Brooks is cool too I reckon
Dark Tower series by King, of course

Don't read much fantasy anymore, so I'm not very informed

The Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy (actually more of a quartet) by Tad William. First book is The Dragonbone Chair. It's the first successful transition of Christianity to a fantasy setting I've ever seen, and a damn good series, too.

Also the Farseer Trilogy, by Robin Hobb, starting with Assasin's Apprentice. The plot tends to get thin, but the characterization is excellent. There's two more trilogies following, both good but not as good.

I would recommend Robin Hobb's Farseer series. The story is based around a boy who grows up in a divided kingdom and is trained to be an assassin. The characters are what really make it worthwhile, they're very well done. There is 'magic' in it though, not sure if thats up your alley. It's intially a trilogy but the same characters are continued in another trilogy. If you like fantasy, i can't see you not liking it.

The other is Gene Wolfe's series, Book of the new sun. This series is another beast entirely. It's a mix of science fiction and fantasy. It takes place in a kind of post apocalyptic period. The main character's proffesion is a torturer, and he must go on a journey of sorts. It's done as a first person narrative, and is very dreamy and surreal in parts. It would be a "fine wine" of science fiction/fantasy. I've read it twice already, and each time it gets better. It is not an easy read, but well worth it.

EDIT i'm too slow and pyrus has beaten me to Hobb. Said the exact same thing as me though!

I thought liveship traders was ALMOSt as good as farseer. Again the characters were so well done (so epic in scope). The only reason farseer gets the nod is I just find myself caring about Fitz more. I thought the Tawny man trilogy was a fitting end to the series though.

Dark Elf Trilogy

The books started off innocently enough, but now he's written like 20 books around this single character and he JUST. WON'T. DIE.

It's fucking ludicrious. I gave up after the fourth series or whatever he wrote on that faggot and his stupid little happy-go-lucky friends, who incidentally enough... WILL. NOT. DIE. EITHER.
