Fav recording Hi-Hats

yeah Hi-hats with too much presence can pretty much decapitate a listener and ruin a great tune (same with cymbals in general), but if you get them right, I reckon they are gold....

The key, IMO, is to get trashy sounding hats. Hats which are too concentrated in the 2 to 4kHz region with a constant 'kzzzk' sound are going to kill your record. Definitely avoid having them too closed.

Christian recently combined his A and K custom hats for the Vanishing Point drums, Dean. The result was really good IMO. Their tonalities sort of balanced each other out. Don't be afraid to mix and match hats to get what you're after.

my favourite hats are thin, preferably natural finished edge.
13" is my preference for feel.
rippled bottom edge also helps alot for that sizzle which hihats are known for.

personally I play 13.25" K hybrids. best hats I've ever played by far. It's K custom so they're turkish style hammering design, while retaining the modern zildjian sound (the brilliant centre helps). perfect for all styles.
hand hammered turk stuff such as paiste twenty, meinl byzance etc comes close though.

as ermz says, you want trashy hats. BUT only a little bit trashy or they will have no definition and sound like crap. (unless you're playing jazz where i guess they could fit)

to be honest i dont even know why z custom hats exist. they're all clangy/gongy. fucking horrendous.

EDIT: b20 or gtfo. I havent heard a single paiste (excluding the turkish made b20 twenty series) that didnt sound like shit to me. and they use cheap b8 bronze.
meinl b10 stuff is passable though ;)

I'm looking forward to the VP album, that Xmas Hills studio looked like some magic happening and some pretty quick tunes too which will be good....I'm going to start a shoot out with the Hi Hats, the only way I'll find out what I really dig ...thanks heaps for the suggestions guys :)

Yeah, I LOVE my K Hybrids, sound fantastic. The smaller size also gives them less volume, which makes them much more controllable in a mix.
