Well, I wouldn't go so far as to call Opeth a death metal band. Damnation wasn't exactly brutal.

Death maybe at one point could of been called death metal but wheres the blast beats? even chuck said they are just plain out metal.

Do you have "the first dammned" cd? it has their first 2 demos on it plus live tracks, and "9 steps" live is unbelievable on it.

It's impossible to say. =P Do In Flames count? If I can't choose some melodic death metal band I'd go with Morbid Angel. Those guys are amazing.
