Favorite Classical Composers? Pieces?

you know, the music that came before the mighty genre of metal.
Bach and Vivaldi being my fav's, whats yours?
Love the Brandenberg Concertos:loco:

The first things that come to mind are Mozarts and Ligeti's Requiems.

this is my kind of topic:cool:
lets see.
shostakovich - my favorite, his symphonies , quartets, violin and cello concerto
are amazing, everything from his mid and later period(dark and depressing, check out string quartet n15) is amazing. (not too found of his first compositions, too jazzy and goofy)

arvo pärt - spiritual , emotional minimalistic music, awesome chorals, check out cantus in memory of benjamim britten, so much emotion, beautiful music.

beethoven - love his piano works, symphonies (not all of them, the minor key ones are the best)

bach - the master...

then a lot of other composers, stravinsky and bartok are amazing as well, mahler for the big epic symphonies, dvorak symponies are cool too, sibelius as some beautiful music, allan petterson with his death symphonies, gorecki
of course, rachmaninov his piano concertos and the isle of the dead are great. i'm not too found of mozart but i have to give props to him for the requiem, masterpiece!

still so much to hear, so many composers, each one with so many works...i still havent heard the entire work of one single composer lol

Mozart without a doubt...

Paganini - his 24 caprices

Chopin -loved Etude No.3 in E Major, Opus 10

Tchiakovsky

Beethoven

Vivaldi - Four Seasons of course...

I will think of others later on and post them...

somehow I have a weak spot for the adagios/largos of old baroque concertos.Vivaldi, Händel, Bach and such...so sad and beautiful

yah the arvo part pieces are quite beautiful indeed, and the early shostakovich is to jazzy but the later stuff is real neat.

glad you didn't mention wagner, cant stand the man nor his music

i do love the ride of the valkyries, really epic, other than that never really listen to much of his music, he is supposed to be real good at operas , but i hate opera so i never care much about wagner.

Not adagios, but try some Pachelbel--the teacher or inspiration if you will, of Bach. Some immortal stuff.

i know his canon on d major of course, its a pretty piece, but not really my style, im into more dramatic, sad, epic or agressive stuff eheh

Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev would sound awesome played Metallica style. If no one has done this yet, they really should. Favourite right now= Beethoven

Well, I don't know the full titles of the concerts, but:

Händel: "Largo F-major (from Xerxes)"
Händel: Concerto B-major, Largo (oboe or something)
Corelli: Concerto grosso D-major, Largo (awesome)
Bach: Concert A-minor for 4 pianos(?) - Largo
Vivaldi: Concerto D-major for mandolin - Largo (awesome)
Vivaldi: Concerto C-major for flute - Largo (awesome!)
Telemann: Concert E-minor for trumpet - Largo
Bach: "Air" (obviously...but I love it)

I think this stuff is depressing, but in a sweet way ;)

@ Achilles: if you're into harpsichord-only baroque pieces, check out Francois Couperin ("Pieces de clavecin" for example) or Domenico Scarlatti's sonatas.

Dvorak seems to be the most underrated composer on here. The only romantic era composer I can note off the top of my head that i find really influential. Anyone else really like any Romantic shit? If you like kind of epic, dramatic, and agressive stuff try to find 'the new world' if you haven't heard it already.

i did mention dvorak, the new world symphony is amazing, so epic!!!
his 7th is great also, maybe even better than the 9th, have have more of his symphonies here but havent listen to them yet eheh

Im really big into the piano, either by itself or featured in a piece. And my girlfriend (who is training to be an opera singer and loves all the classical crap) tells me that I tend to like the romantic period more than anything. Some of my favorites are:

Chopin
Tchaikovsky
Rachmaninov
