Favorte non-shredder....

Considering I don't like many shredders in the first place

Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
Piotr Grudnzinski (Riverside)
Alex Lifeson (Rush)
Carlos Santana
Steve Rothery (Marillion, Wishing Tree)
Dan & Dag Swanö (Edge of Sanity, Nightingale, Unicorn)
Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation)
Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth)
Mark Eizinger (Incubus)

Ah, even though paul gilbert is a shredder im still gonna say he is one of my favorites even when not shredding.

but uh idk i guess

eric johnson, he can shred too though...

In no particular order...

Joe Bonamassa
Carlos Santana
BB King
Ted Nugent
Dan Huff
SRV
Gary Moore
John Sykes
John Norum
Brett Reid
Jeff Healey
Neal Schon
Randy Rhoads
David Gilmour
Randy Jackson (from Zebra, not American Idol)
Robben Ford
Larry Carlton
Steve Stevens

And I'll throw Vai and Johnson in as not-your-typical-shred favorites. I suppose shred needs to be defined better - is it simply playing fast, or is it more related to neo-classical playing (sweeping arpeggios, over-use of Phrygian Dominant, etc.)? If it's more neo-classical, then Vai and Johnson clearly do not fit into "shred".

I always thought Kai Hansen was a pretty tasteful and melodic lead guitarist...Emppu from Nightwish has some great phrasing as well. And I pretty much learned how to play the guitar from learning Dave Gilmour solos.

Of course, in my mind, "non shredder" would also include fusion guitarists, and if thats the case my #1 favorite non shredder is Allan Holdsworth.

Shredding in my book is Playing guitar fast for the sake of playing fast, nothing else really..you know, like Rusty Cooley..

wow, no love for Al DiMeola? Hes one of the few people who play ultra fast while still keeping it fresh, tasteful and not overdone, thus not a shredder..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydxJZ9IOlPA&search=Al DiMeola

I also forgot the mention John Schaffer and Arjen Anthony Lucassen...

this is really hard for me, most of the music i listen to is real fast, malmsteen, vai , satch, etc.

i still find it just beatiful, rich, and full...

i forgot to mention slash, i knows its really cliche but i will always have a soft spot in my heart for guns n roses. I think he is a really cool blues style player.

i see nobody here mentioned any of the following great non-shredders whom i admire alot:

- Steve Morse
- Frank Gambale (Fusion Incarnate)
- John Maclaughlin (Mahavishnu !!!)
- Eddie Van Halen (not considered a shredder in my book... just in case some do !!!)
- Phil Collin (of Def Leppard)
- Nuno Bettencourt (somewhere in the same league as Steve Vai and Eric Johnson)
- The great Gary Moore... i just had to mention him again eventhough he's already been mentioned (once only though)
- Tony Macalpine is also a worthy mention eventhough he's been mentioned once earlier
- and finally and most importantly Michael Angelo Batio  .... J.K. :p !!
