Prosecutors charged a 23-year-old man from Seattle yesterday with a felony count of malicious mischief for allegedly smearing fecal matter over several fruits and vegetables at a Bellevue Safeway.
On Saturday, Safeway employees called police to their Evergreen Village store, complaining that a man had been loitering. Police warned the man, and he left.
But the next night, Jerry Richardson allegedly came back with dark thoughts on his mind. Prosecutors say Richardson approached a Safeway employee and whispered, "Hey, your produce section is dirty."
When the worker asked for a clarification, Richardson allegedly replied, "Someone needs to clean up the produce area, it smells like" feces.
The produce manager later found what appeared to be human feces smeared on broccoli, avocados, apples, cantaloupe and tomatoes.
Police found Richardson soon after and arrested him. In a police interview, he denied the charge.
Safeway estimated damage at between $30,000 and $40,000.
Jenkins is set to be arraigned Wednesday.
