I was surprised how loud I got this one, didn't really notice til i got out to the car. All easy dudes to work with, drummer was quick, vocalist did tight doubles and finished up quick as well. Guitars needed very few edits.

I was going for a joey-esque mix, even though the drums are a bit more natural sounding and the guitar is almost all full takes (not edited or slipped together.)

Guitar tone is mesa fredmanz from the man himself Harvey, and required almost no processing at all.

Band is Die Another Day from Providence, RI

The midrangey right guitar in the beginning hurts my ears a bit.

I would personally like a bit more kik, but that's just me. I'm not really "feeling" it.

Fucking love the part a little half way through where he says "burst" and it ping pongs. Awesome.

i know what you mean, and i think it's the bass... the bass sim I use sounds so good, generally, but there's this occasional harsh 3khz spike that stabs through sometimes and it's like nails on a chalkboard. the tricky part is, i hafta C4 it out, because if i notch it, all the aggression and mid-range attack on the driven bass gets killed. but good call, i'll tinker with it, see if i can multi-band that shit into submission without choking out the grit.

I'm not talking about the normal guitar parts, I'm talking about the break at the beginning when it just stops with guitar and vox, then the guitar part happens again a few seconds later (panned to the right). Lo-fi effect on it, but it's a little too white noise for me. Sorry I can't give you a time in the song, but I'm just listening at work and can't download it.

oh yes yes... i gotcha. easy fix

Another awesome one, Jujuu! I'm always loving your snares, which one is this if you don't mind sharing? And are you still compresing kick/snr/toms in parallel and blending in slightly?

snare/toms are the joey truth kit, kick is metal foundry just smacked with one of the presets. no other processing at all on the drums. the only mics going into the drum mix are the overheads, rode NT1s, spaced pair, with just a bit of eq/comp from the SSL channel.

disappointingly simple?

my new drum room is tiny and exceptionally dead, so that allows me to get a really clean bright overhead sound that doesn't have any harsh unclear frequencies. no reflections at all also means i can get the overheads closer together and the kit will still sound super wide. the difference there, between a dead room and an untreated room, is literally astonishing. i'd take this room over my last room even if i had to use all behringer gear...it'd still sound a shit ton better.

Well damn...! Props on getting a MF kick useable. And I hate keeping it simple but I guess it works for you! =D

what i most enjoy about the MF kicks is that there's two of them, and the often over-looked checkbox to automatically alternate the hits. Instantly, your shits gonna sound natural as fuck. add a little bit of room buttah, process that shit properly (in my case, spanking it with a pre-fabbed toontrack preset) and you're good to go.
