First let me say that I've lurked on this board for a long time now and have learned a lot from some very talented people here. I've also become aware of Mr. Sneap's work (and his work on albums I already loved) and I'm really impressed, especially with his attention to making entire mixes sound great without sacrificing the tones of the individual instruments.

I've held off posting anything here because 1.) I haven't felt that I had anything really worth-while to contribute. I'm not an aspiring engineer or producer and my mixing skills are amature at best, and 2.) I don't really play 100% metal like I figured people would expect to hear on a forum hosted by UltimateMetal.com.

I do so now because I think I may have something that many of you haven't done or heard. I've attempted to write a (mostly) metal tune using my recently-acquired '63 Gibson SG Junior. The guitar is just a mahogany slab with the original single dog-ear P-90 in the bridge position. Nothing special, just old, worn-in, and a lot of fun to play. I know my mix is pretty raw and there are probably flaws in it that I can't even hear, but I would appreciate your thoughts on the sound of the guitar tones and song. Consider this my "hello, I'm Adam, nice to meet you all."

Demo form, recorded at home with a PODxt for use in my band: The Fear

Edit: note that my band isn't called The Fear - that's just the cheesy working title for the track. The band is called istari.

CLEAN / nicely separated mix.

Nice job, SoSo.

It held my ear the entire time.

SG with P90 pups... the full on kyuss vibe.

Dude... this just sounds really good and solid... i have no "ear sores" other than that really hard panned on the right lead thing that came in.

Thanks, Ether. I spent most of my time after tracking going in and pulling out a lot of unnecessary frequencies - the first time I've ever tried doing that, and I'm pretty happy with the result. I was pretty surprised at the difference it made. I agree with you about the hard-panned lead. It's not really supposed to be that loud, either - I intended vocals to be there.

I'm glad you dug the song, also. I'm totally in love with the SG Junior - it's the lightest, most stripped-down guitar I own but it kills the super-versatile Warmoths I have built to pieces in the tone department. Now I just need to work on getting my chops up to speed so I can hang with you guys on here. :)

Cool - thanks for the encouraging comments. I was afraid that because I'm so nuts over the guitar that I wasn't able to be objective about the sound. Maybe in a day or two I'll be able to furnish some clips of the SG Jr. through my Splawn - I have not been able to even come close to replicating the sound of that amp with the XT.

And I've tried... oh how I've tried.
