Just got done listening to the new Flying Colors album (Self Titled) - the sort of super group effort between Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, Kansas, Deep Purple, solo), Neal Morse (Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, solo), Mike Portnoy (well you know), Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse Band, ...), and Casey McPherson (the unknown in the group - well he did have a Disney track that reached #5 on Billboard in 2010) and must say it's pretty damned good.
It's very much an amalgamation of it's individual parts - obviously it could be called a prog rock album, but it's a bit more varied. Add in some funkiness, some pop overtones, and you know what it sort of sounds like.
I had no idea what to expect from this combination but figured it might be something like Transatlantic. Now I loved Transatlantic, it's my type of prog rock, but I'm really loving Steve Morse's influence here as he is one of my all-time favorite guitarists. The unknown Casey McPherson has a great voice; I have a feeling he will be heard from in the future.
if you like this sort of music - it's worth checking out.
