Focusrite ISA828 question?

I have the ISA428 with the digital card, and yes, you can run it 8 channels optical or AES/EBU, so I'd imagine the 828 would be the same. In my case I use the 4 built-in pres and then the second four channels work like a 4-channel A/D unit, with my other pres feeding them. All 8 channels go into Pro Tools HD via the digital output.

I have the 828 with AD board.
It works exactly the same as any other preamp with ADAT out
Really good pre and the impedance switching is cool.
The digital board is really good but I am using the analog line outs these days lined into my ZED-r16.
I noticed a big step up when I got the AD board and went direct (to RME Digiface) rather than line in to my old Yamaha 01v96,
but the ZED's AD sounds as good as the 828 AD board.
Really good value pre. You see people dis them on Gearslutz and the like but you see lots of them in broadcast and in studios.

+1 to this. Got my 428 a few days ago and it fucking kills IMO. I had a UA 2-610 before and wasn't impressed much at all with that thing... It sounded good, but it wasn't like "Wow, this sounds so much better than my stock pres..." On the other hand... the ISA has completely turned every single dynamic mic I've owned into pure gold. I've never preferred a dynamic on any vocal source I've recorded; plugged my Beyer M201TG into the 428 and the results were like night and day, so much so that I just traded my main vocal mic (LDC) for a Shure SM7b and cash (I've owned 3 in the past and ended up selling all of them after being severely underwhelmed).

People on Gearslutz are high. I think if it doesn't cost $700+ a channel, it automatically sucks. I was told that the ISA "had no character" and is "sterile and muddy," by many people on there, before I decided to buy mine. I dunno what they're listening to, cause it's literally none of those things.

BUY IT PHIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALSO: PICK UP THAT DEATHADDER AFTER WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ahahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhahahahah

I tend to agree and disagree at the same time.
Isa serie have character but aren't colored piece. People expected to find same color as 10.. series because it was designed by R Neve.
But if you search you will find some Isa lover's on Gearslutz (Jules for exemple). ;)

For me you have Neve/API pre on the colored side, GML/Martech on the clean side and at the middle you have Focusrite and Avalon. Isa tend to be on the colored side and Avalon on the clean side.

New Isa serie are good but personalty I only looking for an isa 110 pair or a 215. But those thing cost some money (around 1k/1,5k euro per channel).

As always, imho

I wish I never had to sell mine. Running two with the digital outs would be perfect for drums.

I had the older one with the VU meters. 4 preez for that price is well worth it.

Yep. I've got the 428 MK I with the VUs and it sounds fantastic. Only cost me $750, too. Try finding something even close to that quality at only ~$185 a channel.
