Jerusalem has finally been released. After a ten year delay, legal battles, and the band even breaking up, Sleep has issued the real and final version of Jerusalem, retitled to its original name of Dopesmoker.
For those who dont know, Sleep were THE band that started the whole "stoner rock" movement in the 90's. Their first album, Volumn One, was released in 91, but was lost amid the grunge rock movement. Their second album, called Sleep's Holy Mountain, was released in 1993 to critical acclaim. During a tour of Europe, Sleep were offered a major label contract with London Records, and immediatly after the release of Sleep's Holy Mountain, they began work on their third album.
After a show in New York, Sleep spent some time with a local who smoked them out, and then witnessed the word of God to them. The band changed the name of the album from Dopesmoker, to Jerusalem, and issued it to their record label. To London Records suprise, the album was one 60 minute long, slothfull, doom filled and stoned out song. Not progressive, as in different parts. It was one entire song.
London demanded that the album be re recorded, more accessible, and edited. Sleep refused, and spent their entire recording money on marijuana, smoked it, and disbanded, refusing the release the album.
Six years past and Doom Metal label Rise Above Records released Jerusalem, but it was an unfinished, under produced version, unauthorized, and cut up into several tracks, and was even cut short.
But now, with the bands approval, even after ten years of being defunct, TeePee records has released Jerusalem under its original name, Dopesmoker. Fully produced, full length, and with an extra, unreleased track, Dopesmoker has arrived to great reviews.
So... if any of you guys like epic pieces of work, music with great grooves, and well thought out, then check out Dopesmoker.
Or, check out Sleep's Holy Mountain, for even more great music.
