Greg Prato recently spoke with former Megadeth guitarist, Chris Poland, for Ultimate-Guitar.com. An excerpt follows…

As far as Chris Poland is concerned, Megadeth’s second album, Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?, could have sounded better, although he now appreciates it for what it is.

Starting Megadeth in 1983, Dave Mustaine always had nothing but impeccable musicians in the band. One of those is certainly guitarist Chris Poland, and the early lineup was rounded up with bassist David Ellefson and drummer Gar Samuelson. Together, they recorded two albums, Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good! and the aforementioned “Peace Sells,” the latter of which is widely considered one of the most important records in metal music.

Recently, we chatted with Chris Poland, reflecting on this early thrash metal period, with the guitarist sharing his opinion on the genre and the sound of “Peace Sells.”

Ultimate-Guitar.com: Certain years have given us more classic metal albums than others, and 1986 was certainly one such time: Metallica’s Master Of Puppets, Megadeth’s Peace Sells, Slayer’s Reign In Blood, etc.

Chris Poland: “That genre exploded. And it was the bands you just mentioned were the bands that started that genre. Once it caught on, it started a whole avalanche of bands like that. And then all the bands today, a lot of those really heavy bands, they came out of that.

“But it was very bizarre, man. When me and Gar [Samuelson] first started playing that, Gar told me, ‘This stuff’s super challenging, so you’re gonna really like it.’ And I did. It was fun to play. It was challenging.

“But I just wish we would have been more on top of our ‘tone game’ when we made ‘Peace Sells.’ But hey, people argue with me about that all the time. They’re like, ‘No, man, you couldn’t have made that record sound any better,’ they tell me. And I finally just say, ‘Yeah, I guess so.’

“And I do like the original, but I like what Dave did when he remastered and re-recorded everything. I do like that, too.”

Find out if Poland thinks there was competition between early thrash metal bands, and if anything could have been done differently at the time for that “Peace Sells” lineup to have stayed together, at Ultimate-Guitar.com.
